Ok – it's going to be Green Onions – or Time is tight – and these are "monster" tracks. Authentically American music at its very best.

But…Be My Lady is just sooo funky!

Green Onions.

McWong7326 Jan 2017 7:07 p.m. PST

Green Onions, though I must admit I prefer the Blues Bros. version.

Winston Smith26 Jan 2017 7:14 p.m. PST

Time is Tight

Plus the hundreds (thousands?) of Stax recordings where they were the house band.

Tommy2026 Jan 2017 7:31 p.m. PST

Yeah, it's Green Onions.

That was a more….fluid setup, so not always the full line-up, plus Cropper might have also been doing the production side as well a bit of co-writing to get the song into shape.

But…well….why not? As long as it's not Stax tracks where the Mar-keys were the backing band….'cos that's a whole 'nother poll suggestion grin

Theme from "Hang 'Em High".

Winston Smith27 Jan 2017 7:58 a.m. PST

For those who like the Blues Brothers versions, that's no coincidence. Dunn and Cropper were the backbone of the Blues Brothers Band.

What amuses me are the bands in the camp of "18 months in the studio" era.
Then we have Sinatra and all the studios of the Stax and Motown periods who made superior music in an afternoon.
I'll put a Stax "album" up against a prog rock masterpiece any day.

when this becomes a poll, please put up a selection for "I have no idea what you're talking about."

Cool but Grant Green and Lou Donaldson are funkier

You're not wrong. There might be one or two exceptions to the rule – but Stax was a powerhouse of good music.

The modern equivalent is Dap-Tone. There it's the Dap-Kings who are the "house band" and they are also an awesome powerhouse of music. I'm happy to buy an album released on Dap-Tone unheard – maybe I don't even know the band – because it just can't be bad. So far – no regrets.

Oh – and since if this ever runs (grin) someone (probably a cricket fan) will say "what, no Soul Limbo?" here's a suggestion for

Soul Limbo !
