I know this is slightly off topic for the Rev War board, but I also know there is interest in this period there as well. I have not finished it yet, but this is an outstanding book on the Braddock campaign.

It blows a lot of holes in a some of the positions held by a lot of F&I gamers too.

I haven't read Preston yet, but it is worth remembering that the version of the battle most of us were fed in school is based on 1812 era propaganda.

Preston's book is outstanding, and he goes a long way to dispelling some of the myths of the campaign. Having toured with David as part of the Braddock's Road Association, I can say he is a well spoken and well-versed historian when it comes to this campaign.

Read in conjunction with Stephen Brumwell's Redcoats and you can't go wrong. Both are excellent books.

There's a French & Indian Wars board. Hit the complaint button [!] and ask Bill to crosspost to it.

Yeah, for some reason it wasn't coming up as an on the 18th Century boards cross post options. I know a lot of people on the Rev War board are also interesting in F&I. I'm not sure some of the F&I games will take kindly to some of the myths this book busts. :-)

I will be interested to see his the author addressed the report special formation Braddock was using day of the battle, which likely caused a lot of the confusion and led to the defeat. Almost there in the book.
