Well said, Flashman14! Actually it's Assistant Surgeon William Brydon, legendary "sole survivor" of the British and Indian army that left Kabul under a guarantee of safe conduct from the Afghans. There were about 4,000 troops, maybe 500 of whom were British, and about 12,000 civilian camp followers, the vast majority were slaughtered or died from exposure along the approximately 80 mile march through snow-covered mountains to Jalalabad. Re: the movie version… well, it would be about the worst British defeat of the Victorian era. |

I always thought it interesting that one of the best military painters of the Victorian era was a woman: Elizabeth Thompson (Lady Butler). Married to a General, there's a, perhaps apocryphal, story that he used his influence to arrange a cavalry charge so she could sketch studies for the Scots Grey's Waterloo painting Scotland Forever! |

Absolutely agree about a movie on Bryden. Moreover since after his harrowing escape he ended up in India and went through the Siege of Lucknow! Talking of bad luck. |
