Cool, Armand! I didn't know Remington travelled to Mexico. I was also surprised to see that their uniforms were so French style, since they'd thrown the French out of their country 30 years earlier, and then the Germans had defeated the French, so everybody copied their uniforms.

I saved a copy of the drawing of Mexican infantry in square to my colonial files--it gives a feel for what anybody's square must have looked like.

I'm curious about this 1893 uprising in Chihuahua I haven't heard of. I'll have to google it.

I can't envisage a situation that would have required Mexican infantry to form square in the late 1880s/early 1890s. I suspect it derives entirely from Remington's imagination.

No… from memories of that Era… there were infantry squares from the Mexican Army… I cannot remember the tittle of them… but I'm sure I have read about it…

Sorry Armand, but my Spanish is limited to only a few words.

Googling failed to elicit more than a brief mention of the uprising of 1893.

I have no doubt that the square formed part of the Mexican army's tactical repertoire at this time. I just can't imagine a need for its use, and therefore doubt the authenticity of Remington's dramatic action scene.

Sorry for that my friend…

Maybe if you used the translator?….
