Getting to the point I may have enough ships for the entire battle. Just a couple of opinions sought. How would you deploy – Strictly historical? If not what alternative? Command of combined fleet – the Spanish and French were intermingled. How would you split the command between two layers – Go national and let them get in each other's way? What to do with Frigates – they acted as message relays- Keep them off to stop players being tempted to throw them in? |

I would deploy adapting to the space you have, not enough place for the brits? columns of two; divide the combined in vanguard, centre and rearguard squadrons led by dumanoir, villeneuve and gravina; frigates should act as the rest of the ships and perhaps boost command rolls if wihib x distance of the squadron leader. |

I would always go with the historical deployment if at all possible. You can always have ships entering on subsequent turns as the formation advances. But the scale you're gaming and the space available will have a lot to say about that. As for the frigates, I would leave them off and just abstract their role into inter-player communication rolls, if your rules have such a thing. If it comes down to the frigates making a difference in combat, the Franco-Spanish fleet has already lost! As for command of the fleet, I tend to like situations that recreate command and control difficulties. I would divide them between the two players by nationality, and only allow very limited orders to be passed down from the squadron commanders – no other communication between players allowed. |
