I have been using GW's Earthshade but I do not find it to outline well the details and make a nice thin dark line in the recesses. What do you guys use to bring out the details of the sculpt? thanks |

Watered down acrylic in a darker shade than the uniform colour. So, I outline grey on a white uniform, dark red on a red etc. If a uniform colour is particularly dark like a Prussian blue or Rifle green I would use black. |

Personally I just use Winsor & Newton drawing ink diluted with water – usually I want to wash brown rather than black, and use the Peat Brown, but Black will work. |

I also use Winsor & Newton inks. I prefer the Nut Brown but the Peat Brown and Black work fine. The Peat Brown has a more reddish hue and the Nut Brown is more yellow hued. |

Aren't washing and lining two different things? I don't use a wash to line, just ordinary black paint and a fine brush, and a steady hand. Takes a while but using a wash would mean all my figures look like theyve been digging coal… |

I always considered these two separate techniques as Mike suggested. |

You can blackline with wash, just not the "slop and glop". Carefully touch the tip of the brush to a recess, and the wash should flow out. Or, if you "slop and glop" deposit more of the wash where you would blackline. Result may be more of a shade than a line. Myself, I sometimes use Army Painter Inks, which are washes, to line figures. |

yes, that's what Ced says. Not washing all over the fig but just going into the recesses. thanks all for the suggestions! |

Reaper Master Series Brown liner (walnut) and Grey liner are FANTASTIC!!! If you don't own ANY other Reaper paints, you NEED to have these in your painting arsenal. |

I treat wash and line separately as other people say. For lining, I want something with a reasonable amount of pigment, but that dries slowly as I often need to clean up mistakes and it is about the last stage so doesn't slow down the process. Anything that meets that will do A great painter on TMP uses watercolours I use Rowney inks diluted about 50% with some added retarder – mostly because I have the inks already. I mix a dropper bottle so ready to go. John |
