Ever since I started in this hobby, I've been hindered by having to rely on moving my troops to someone else's place if I wanted to play a game.

But today I came up with an idea, after I realised I hadn't used the desk in my small study for a desktop computer ever since we got a laptop. So I pushed our filing cabinet into the leg space, and pulled the whole desk out from the wall by about a metre.

This allowed me to lay a 4′ x 4′ table on top. Small – but it should enable skirmish games. It even gives me some hidden storage space in the gap behind the pulled-out desk.

And I'm going to figure out a way that a 6′ x 4′ could be laid on top temporarily for slightly larger games – perhaps with some sort of trestle legs to support the 2′ overhang.

Now I can host (skirmish) games at my place, or even play solo games over several days without having to pack up. Why I never though of doing this before, I don't know!

Great looking game in a small space.

Looks like a comfy, inviting place to while away the hours reading and pushing lead. thumbs up

Looks great!

4' x 6' is easy to do. Just pull the table out a little further, and buy a 4' x 6' piece of plywood to lay on top, with only a 1' overhang on either end.

If you're worried about bumping it, add a couple of legs to one end, that can be removed/unscrewed, or strap it down to the filing cabinets before game play, and then throw your terrain on top of that.

Looks great! Good thinking!

Looks perfect. Great looking scenery too.

I am actually playing 15mm skirmishes on a 60cm x 60cam area, so 4'x4' should be ok for 28mm.

Looks a very comfortable hobby bolt-hole overall. Broom handles are good support as they are strong in the compression stakes, these and the things for holding wardrobe rails, etc. make good anchor points. Any decent DIY outlet should have both.

Very nice and inviting.

A key bit for the bigger table is to get a roll of the grippy drawer liner stuff. Use some industrial adhesive to stick it to the bottom of your big plywood sheet.

This will keep the table from moving from minor bumps and jostles in a small space like that, and also protect the top of your desk (upon which you could always paint a good ol' river crossing bridge terrain map for small, drop of the hat battles).

Congratulations! And a nicely done layout too.

But don't feel you're inherently limited to skirmish games. Lots of other choices. One is to pick up a few 5mm castings. At 1"=100 or 150 yds, that's table enough for a full-size battle, and neither troops nor terrain will take up much storage space.

And if you convert to a smaller scale and manage the 4'x6' you can expand out of skirmish into battle games. Just saying.

You have done a great job in utilizing space! It is nice to have a soldier table all your own.

corona6622 Jan 2017 8:24 p.m. PST

Congratulations! A place to call your own.

Nice! Several years ago, I realized my wife had taken over the dining table for a desk, and that I was unlikely to ever have a room where I could set up a big table, and made a 3 foot by 4 foot folding battlefield for Saga and other skirmish games.

Great looking table, and looks like a lovely spot to have a game too.
