F-23 – The jet America should have purchased? link A pity they didn't at least purchase a squadron or three of these, for comparisons and further development. Seems it has a lot of advantages over the F-22. |

I think the big thing that both the air force and navy ignored was the range. Cold War mindset of European theatre + permissive tanker environments in real life combat ops meant that range was not really considered. In fact USN fleet range has shrunk considerably since retirement of F-14 and A-6. USAF lost long range tactical strike with retirement of F-111.
But now we've got the rise of China and Russia and they're introducing long range stealth fighters and long range AAMs and AShMs. Even if they can't tangle with an F-22, they can shut it down by destroying or grounding the tankers. They can keep USN carriers out of the combat zone through threat of AShMs.
So it turns out more focus should've been on longer unsupported range. Oh and maybe side looking radar and IRST: warisboring.com/the-f-22-stealth-fighter-has-more-than-one-weakness-compared-to-modern-russian-warplanes-6b9f3606b5b5#.atbbejl33 Still F-22 is a damn fine air dominance jet and so far nothing can beat it (well in exercises). |

A squadron or three wouldn't have really worked; the cost-per-unit would have been astronomical with such a small purchase. Though the F-23 arguably was the fighter that should have been selected in the first place, I agree. Or the F-23 should have been reworked into a long-range strike aircraft (F/B-23) with the F-22 as the air superiority fighter, and 150-300 F/B-23 purchased to replace the F-111. -Will |

For me, the main problem with all the Western air forces seems to be that we're going for expensive planes that we expect to everything. |

Yes, I think there's a risk that our 'do everything' concept is going to result in fighters that don't any one thing excellently, and suffer against aircraft dedicated to that role. The F-35 could easily turn into this. Buying the full original order of F-22's, pushing for a F/B-23 long-range strike aircraft and leaving the F-35 to just be a mid-range F-16 replacement might have made more sense in the longer run then pinning all hopes on the F-35. -Will |
