Elan Deluxe a free set of Napoleonic rules available at Deep Fried Happy Mice. They look well layer out and extensive. Battalions on average are three stands with four figs on 40mm by 15mm bases. Rules look simple enough to run a lot of units.
I was wondering if anyone has been playing them and what they thought of the game.

Been playing them for years.

In '15 we used them for a re-fight of Ligny:

Over the years, several modifications have been introduced.

An old-fashioned set (all those charts!) but fun to play.

WOW what a great looking game! We did Ligney with Song of Drums and Shakos Big battle but it didn't look that good!

Thanks, Mike.

ELAN's good in that you can do big battles as well as the division-a-side it's designed for.

Good luck & tell me what you decide/how you get on.

So would you say these are on the similar level of play in complexity and elegance as Shako II?
That what they look to be from a quick viewing.

curious

similar

Not really. ELAN were a breath of fresh air compared to, say, the Empire rules but they still have lots of "chrome" compared to Shako.

For example, infantry battalions have separate companies of light infantry who can move independent of their parent unit or the fact you can attach sappers to units assaulting BUAs to increase factors etc.

Fussy? Possibly but I like them.

And our Leipzig game (7 years ago):

And Waterloo game (6 years ago) also using ELAN.

3-4 of us gaming but I think this shows that ELAN can handle lots of figures.
