Like it says on the tin – anyone suggest a good 1 volume history? I cut my teeth on Hibbert's "Destruction of Lord Raglan", so well written but frightfully Anglo-centric, and doesn't cover the whole war. I've read "The Banner of Battle" which is mainly a diplomatic history of the war that finally answered the question of why the Russians retreated from the Danube. No, it wasn't rogue British officers leading irregular raids on the Russians as one book I read suggested. |

Well, I recall enjoying Royle's Crimea when I read it many years ago. Anglo-centric again but a good read. |

The book by Orlando Figes appears to be highly rated at Amazon, so check that one out and see if it sounds good to you. |

Hmm, that Figes book sounds pretty good and is available on Kindle. I'll check it some more tomorrow. |

I agree with Jonathan, the Royle book is good albeit a little biased. I am working my way through the Figes book now which is a good read, but having read nearly half of it the landings in the Crimea have not started. As an aside there is some controversy about the Amazon reviews of Figes where it is alleged he wrote some if the reviews himself. For battle histories with a good balance I recommend Mark Adkins "The Charge" and Ian Fletcher "The Battle of the Alma 1854". |

link The Aforementioned Orlando Figes work and Smalls, shown in the link actually bring new information to the table. Smalls is especially useful on armament. |

IIRC,Royle's book did have more coverage of the Turks than others I've read. |

If my memory serves me well, I found "The Crimean War – A Clash of Empires" by Ian Fletcher and Natalia Ishchenko to be very informative when I read it ten years ago. |

Uniforms & Weapons of the Crimean War by Robert Wilkinson-Latham and The Crimean War 1853-56 by G.A. Embelton. Both were worth seeking out for me when we remolded the 15mm Minifigs Crimean War range at GFI. |
