Seems to me this might be very beneficial for many, if not most major historical period categories here on TMP, especially for those new to gaming in a specific genre, so, do you support adding a tactics section to each historical period board?

Yes
No

Sorry, not sure, or I don't care are not options for this poll.

Let's keep it clean and simple.

Yes

Unfortunately, the Napoleonic tactics section can be summarized very quickly

British Infantry Tactics: excellent fire control at close range, 1 or 2 devastating point blank volleys and then charge to victory.

French Infantry Tactics: wild and ineffective firing starting at long range, poor fire control, lose to the British every time.

Allied Infantry Tactics: worse than the French

No. "Tactics" in a game always depend on the rules.
I admire your chutzpah in defining terms and conditions for "your" Poll, but it has never worked before.

No, but I think we could use a "cheap unhistorical wargaming tricks" section to go with each set of rules which gets a place in the Rules Forum.

Cerdic16 Jan 2017 8:17 a.m. PST

No. Keep it in the main discussion board for each historical category. So Napoleonic tactics go in the 'Napoleonic Discussion' board, for example.

No, good God, no more subsections of subsections on TMP. You either have to search in 87 different sections for different topics of interest, or else cross-post to 87 subsections--and the "cross-post" feature has not been updated since 2010 based on the options it gives you. It is not that hard to scroll down a list of topics in a few main discussion boards so as to justify all these darn subsections.

Whatever happened to the idea of starting your title for a post with some sort of topical indicator, like "Tactics: Why Did Skirmishers Not Wear Pants?" posted on the Napleonic Discussion Board? Most all other forums for gaming I have ever seen limit the number of sub-forums and instead posters indicate their specific topic in the title.

NO. Since these are games most tactics resolve to getting the best die roll. grin

Winston Smith16 Jan 2017 10:00 a.m. PST

@Yogi

That would mean that posters would have to come up with better titles than "I was just thinking…"

Yes, but I suggest we re-name it "Strategy and Tactics"

David Manley16 Jan 2017 12:26 p.m. PST

Yes, but there should be a Tactics board, an Operations board and a Strategy board if we are to accurately reflect the principal levels of warfare in each era.

Weasel16 Jan 2017 12:40 p.m. PST

I'll respectfully vote no.

Toronto4816 Jan 2017 1:14 p.m. PST

No thank you. A newcomer to a historical benefit would benefit by being exposed to as many topics as possible for that period

vtsaogames16 Jan 2017 8:05 p.m. PST

Of course, then arguments can break out on the tactics board as Those Who Are Experts shoot down the incorrect tactical postings of the unwashed. Cue the guys who just post cheesy a-historical stuff that happens to work with said rule set.

Show me your sources.

I think that is already called "discussion" …
