I notice a lot of people mount their individual figures on round bases for Bolt Action and Chain of Command. Is this just a fashion thing or is there a practical reason for this? |

I think it's mostly an aesthetic. It also reminds players not to organise figures into ranks, I suspect. John T |

Yes, mainly aesthetic. It also means there is no "Front view/ Side flank" etc. which is in keeping with a skirmish game IMO. |

My rule is loose order troops round bases close order troops square bases. This is needed for periods where different troopers had different formations in battle and I carry it on to WWII where all troopers are loose order. x42 |

Whichever you like. It doesn't matter. |

I do the rank and file on round and squad leaders on square. |

my personal taste…but i prefer sqaure ones..they blend with landscape…and..in case you need to form your minis in close order formation, even bands of natives with TSTAF, with saure bases you save space on the table |

For ww2 I use round bases, aesthetically it reminds these guys are always going to be fighting in loose order. For ancients or horse and musket I use squares as those guys will need to rank up tidy. |

I use round, but mostly because I used fender washers and they are cheap and round! |
mrwigglesworth | 15 Jan 2017 7:16 a.m. PST |
Does it really matter? As long as you have individually based mini's. |

I think it's aesthetics, but I don't really know. It just seemed the thing to do when I started putting figs on bases. I picked up a good insight from Roundwood's world and started putting my leaders on hex bases so they stand out more easily. |

Square bases always seems to say "close ranks" to me :) |

Just preference. I used to use square bases, but have grown to like the round bases better. So now I have both. |

I prefer round for skirmishing, whether for Bolt Action or SAGA, Frostgrave or FiveCore. |

For periods where armies could/would form close order, I use squares. Of course, they can still operate in open order, too. For armies that fought in open/skirmish order, I use round to avoid the temptation of putting them in close order -- it's a reminder. WW2 should always be in open order, therefore round bases. |

personal choice for me – I like round bases as I feel they look better. |

Round bases b/c I can buy washers pretty cheaply. |

Pennies are round, hence round bases.. |

square metal bases, as all my minis are transported on magnetic sheets. The galvanized washers just dont seem to stick as well. |

I also think that round (or oval) bases tend to look better for skirmish gaming, while squares tend to look better when ranked up. However, in principle you can use both for both skirmish and ranked games. |

For WW2: round. For any Horse & Musket period where ranking up matters at all, then squares for regulars. |

I use square for troops and round for leaders, just quicker for me to identify who's who. |
