Following this thread: TMP link There seem to be lots of positive comments about one of their rule sets, but these are balanced with criticism of their company name and their rules naming policy. Do you think they should rebrand the company and/or the names of their rule sets? Do you have any suggestions for better or more appropriate names? |

Only those with no sense of humour are complaining. I don't imagine many people who live outside the UK will have seen the Two Fat Ladies or It Ain't Half Hot Mum, but that's no reason to change stuff. Maybe a few people need reminding we play with toys for a hobby. |

Maybe the rules name qualifies as a hate crime? The law in the UK supports this madness, if I decided to report the name of the rules to the UK police as I was concerned that it could be offensive to someone. The police have to record it for the hate crime stats EVEN if it isn't a crime!! This is why the police can't respond to domestic thefts as they are dealing with so called 'hate crime' and Facebook name calling. It wouldn't look out of place in Mr Eric Blair's famous novel. |

B'maso is a classic name for a book … just ask Richard !!! |

I love the politically incorrect name and titles they've come up with, and will buy them just for that reason. Looking forward to the eventual release of "I Ain't Been Nuked Mum", with that title, for the Cold War, though it has been quite some time since any info, playtests, or other details have been shared regarding availability of them. |
Oh Bugger | 14 Jan 2017 4:20 a.m. PST |
The law in the UK offers no redress to outraged fatties or those offended on their behalf. Wasting police time is still an offence though so perhaps the Lardies are safe for the moment. |

Having a funny, joking or sympa name can be a plus to me. I tend to empathize with that kind of people (moreover, when their work uses to be that good and 'serious') |

It's hardly TFL's fault that Americans don't get British humour. |

As far as changing their name goes, I would think there are Two Fat Chances. |
Huscarle | 14 Jan 2017 5:25 a.m. PST |
Some folks sure lack a sense of humour. I love the TFL rules, good rulesets which are ideal for playing with a group of friends. Agree with everyone else on this thread |
kiltboy | 14 Jan 2017 5:51 a.m. PST |
No chance! Missing from the discussion is that there are historical links to the names such as; Napoleonic Naval rules "Kiss Me Hardy" are the lat words if Nelson at the battle if Trafalgar. ACW rules "They Couldn't Hit an Elephant" last words of General Sedgwick. WW1 rules "Through the Mud and Blood" referenced in the stable belt of the Royal Tank regiment in recongnition of Cambrai. The colours are brown red and green for "Through the mud and blood to the green fields below". There are solid reasons for the names. |

I got into my elevator (in NYC) wearing my TFL sports shirt. A guy got on and said "I love those two women!" |

"should Too Fat Lardies Rebrand?" Let me think for just a second… Several successful rules series over several genre. Well supported and well written rules sets. Very effective website. Very effective merchandising. Yep, they're doing something wrong if all of that is happening in this hobby. |
vtsaogames | 14 Jan 2017 6:33 a.m. PST |
If they don't rebrand they stand to lose billions of dollars from the deep pockets of the many ultra-rich who make up the largest part of the millions of active wargamers. Yeah, right. They should do something original like name their pre-modern systems (something) and (something), and name their WWII systems with butch-sounding German words. Yeah. Lederhosen Aufmarsch! |
Condotta | 14 Jan 2017 6:44 a.m. PST |
Only if they brand as Too Fatter Lardies. |
Jozis Tin Man | 14 Jan 2017 7:04 a.m. PST |
I still prefer Sam Mustafa's joke rules name from an old MWAN issue, "The Glory of Glory!" If the name is akward, just call them TFL. Either way, they produce some of the most historically researched, thoughful, games designs. They have a clear design approach to friction. May not be everyone's cup of tea, coffee, gin, but they are very open with their design philosophy. |
Grignotage | 14 Jan 2017 7:12 a.m. PST |
I'm not crazy about the jokey character names in the rules (like Hugh Jarse) but I like the rules titles and they produce lots of great stuff. |
Dynaman8789 | 14 Jan 2017 7:16 a.m. PST |
Since there is no chance they will rebrand – the name is a major part of the company ethos – this is at best a moot point. |
Whirlwind | 14 Jan 2017 7:26 a.m. PST |
Yes, they should rebrand. They should rebrand Dux Brit to Beerwulf, as originally planned… |

Just bc of a few that are sensitive to the names? I can only imagine gaming with them. Considering how popular TFL rules are it would be crazy to do. It always amazes me how some people react to silly things that make no difference to those except the offended. |
79thPA | 14 Jan 2017 8:07 a.m. PST |
For me, not having any cultural reference, the humor does not translate across the pond. They seem to be successful at doing what they do. |

Northern Monkey | 14 Jan 2017 9:17 a.m. PST |
Can I just say that I wasn't suggesting they should, but it is the case that very, very often a discussion which begins by asking a set of rules is any good, ends with an argument about their names and the names they choose for their rules. Nobody else seems to get that reaction. Accepting the fact that they do very well despite the name issue, would they do better if they did indeed call themselves Lederhosen Aufmarsche Press? |
Gone Fishing | 14 Jan 2017 9:24 a.m. PST |
I love the titles of their games. It's a real shame they didn't go with the marvelous "Beerwulf" instead of the somewhat dull DB. Not that the name matters in the end… |

I thought "I ain't been shot mum" was a hilarious title, even before knowing what it was a reference to. There's a fine line between "funny" and "groan inducing" sure, but war gaming could do with being a bit less self-important. I'll take "TW&T" over the Panzerwank in any event. |
daler240D | 14 Jan 2017 10:15 a.m. PST |
I don't think it's a "sensitivity" issue, I think it's an observation about how it may be hampering the sales internationally of what are VERY GOOD rules in general. The company also has a great value in their periodic releases of supporting materials in the way of campaigns and newsletters. While they (TFL) may be perfectly happy with their sales and market position, clearly they are no where near where other, shall we say more "saavy" marketed companies are in the industry. One may say well what business of mine is it? Fair enough. For selfish purposes I would say if their rules were "more commercial" in their positioning, then more people would play them. (I am one of those people that fall into the camp that there is too much splintering in the hobby due to so many rule sets). If more people took a chance and bought them, then there would be more people playing rules that I think are good. Again, selfish motives, but there is my rationalization for it. |

I liked it when Games Workshop still had a sense of humour. Rogue Trader had the Crimson Fists, apparently a US gay rights movement, the Dark Angels, with their Primarch Lion El Johnson, and their base; The Rock, named after a Nottingham gay club. They had the Rainbow Warriors Chapter named after the Greenpeace vessel, and character names like Obi wan Sherlock Clousseau and Abdul Goldberg. |

Pete at Bacchus once told me that someone in the USA refused to buy his American Revolution range because he called the Americans rebels, despite them being just that! Some people seem to go out of their way to find fault with something, no matter how trivial it is to other people. As to British humour not translating across the pond, again my experience from many visits is that again it depends on the person, like all humour. |
Weasel | 14 Jan 2017 10:56 a.m. PST |
My skirmish rules use "dashing" for fast moves and I had a gentleman suggest I should change it because it sounded too close to "daesh". He was very nice otherwise though :) |

Dale Hurtt | 14 Jan 2017 11:09 a.m. PST |
So they rebrand? Only if they want to (and I doubt they do.) Why is it that people assume that Americans "don't understand" British humor … excuse me, humour, when it could simply be a matter of no longer finding it funny? We get it. We got it when we were 12 and we still get it. People not finding something funny is not the same as someone being offended. Now, if they said they were offended… |

At least they called their Napoleonic rules "Sharp Practice" (with a nice wordplay on the name of a famous fictional character) and not "Snappy Nappy" (with all it's unfortunate connotations with baby wear this side of the pond)! |
