Hi, starting to add support platoons, for a 1-1 massive game, base starting point was a company of infantry (motorised for the British). When we started adding in a AT gun, couple of mortars was straight forward enough, however we are now looking at a multi-player game raising the level of the game, by default. So by mixing/ adding together a couple of players odds and sods, we have whole platoons of MG's, mortars, AT guns etc. So went looking for the platoon command for these types of platoon. (Bayonet Strength) having disappeared. this is proving difficult. Hope this makes sense jon |

The archived bayonet strength pages are pretty vague about support platoon HQs. There isn't actually a great deal for them to do, apart from in the units set up for indirect fire (ie mortar platoons) and even then it was basically a comms organisation to support the operations of the Mortar Fire Controllers. So an officer to read the map, a sergeant to shout at people, someone to make the tea and varying numbers of comms people and lorry drivers should do the trick. |

If I recall correctly, the British mortar platoon also features a lorry with extra ammunition, though that might not be of much practical use for gaming purposes if the rules do not involve tracking down ammunition. |

The detailed WE for the British Inf Bn (as of 1944-45) is retrievable from wayback – link The most I have for the German Paras is the 1944 Bn detail, not Regtl support units. I have pretty much everything for the British Army in 1944-45 at Divisional level and a few things from Corps/Army level. If you're really just looking at HQs for subunits like Atk Tps RA or MMG Pls, for the most part an officer, sergeant and batman will suffice, the admin personnel would be back with the unit transport. Thanks, so basically an officer, NCO and a private, to act as a runner. Would these have radios? cheers jon |

It depends on the subunit you're looking at. An MMG Pl attached to an Inf Bn had two HQ carriers (one for the officer, one for the Sergeant), and the officer's was fitted with both a No.18 and a No.22 set. An Atk Tp, RA, would have a carrier at Tp HQ for its officer, which was also wireless equipped (set type not stated, I'd assume a No.22 set). If it was an M10 Tp then each M10 would have wireless as well as the Tp carrier. Gary |

As I said, an officer, an NCO and someone to make the tea. Pretty standard platoon HQ setup. By contrast, the German MG platoon seems to have a massive establishment, eight blokes in the HQ, and another random eight floating around outside gun teams. I suspect many of these ended up carrying ammo as the gun teams themselves look very small, and there are a lot of people allocated to he platoon horse transport carts. At the very top there is the platoon leader, his 2iC and couple of people to make the tea (presumably the extra guy is there as those jack boots don't polish themselves). |
