The eight-part drama follows Victoria from the time she becomes Queen in 1837 at the age of 18, through her courtship and marriage to Prince Albert. Famous for her candor and spirit, she was the first woman who seemed to have it all: a passionate marriage, nine children, and the job of being Queen of the world's most important nation. Victoria's often tumultuous reign lasted for 63 years; she was England's longest-serving monarch until she was overtaken by Elizabeth II in September, 2015.

And not your stereotypical mage

it picks up after the second episode. It lays a lot of ground work at the outset. good series.

Watched and enjoyed it. Excellent cast and lavish sets. Not bad for something filmed in an old aircraft hanger in Yorkshire! Give it a go for a few episodes before dismissing it.

Googled photos of the actual young queen. none look remotely like the actress, save this, which I'm not sure is the actual queen

I enjoy a good costume drama, even if it doesn't have any battle scenes. If you miss the bloodshed, watch PBS the Hollow Crown. Plenty of blood, plenty of armor, though the battle tactics are dubious.

There are no photos of the young Victoria, only ones after she had given birth several times. Jenna Coleman is similar in height. The series is based on Victoria's own letters and diaries. There is a pointless (to me anyway) sub story between her maid and chef which I suppose is intended to give a view of life below stairs but is pretty superficial. The relationships between Victoria, Albert her family and advisors are pretty interesting as a primer into the early period of her reign as she tries to establish herself and her own style of monarchy.
