I have just purchased some Old Glory 15 Austrian cassions. Each model consists of wheels, axles and main body. However there is a round object with what appears to be three spindles.

Any ideas what this is or where it fits?

This picture from Marengo 1800's blog shows the part in question.

From the pictures I've seen, each one is a rack that attaches to the rear of the cassion body at a 45 degree angle to hold baggage or fodder. The big round blob is just that: excess metal that the racks are attached to. Check Google for pictures of Austrian Napoleonic cassions.

Thankyou for that William. Seems there are some with spare wheels as well.

Don't know about Austrian caissons, but French ones had a spare wheel on the back. Look for photos.

Its actually a French ambulance sausage vehicle/cassion where the DOCs /attendants rode on top ( like the Austrian cavalry artillerist do on the gun carriage saddle)and wounded underneath on ham-mic set-up [before the new version we are a little more familiar with under Napoleon/ Baron Larey].
The Pcs bits "in question" were the handles for the second rider/ back rest fore the first. There should be a hole at top near front of cassion body for it.
To make it look more as "true austrian cassion" I cut of the first section off of the 6, to shorten the body, and added the "handle" pcs, in question, to the back as per WW.
Then added a spare wheel to that. I also changed the rear wheels to the OG austrian cannon wheels, which are larger.
I use these for my Grenz batteries.

You might best invest in the more expensive blue moon version, If conversion time is a premium as it is for me.

Good Luck!

Thankyou for that marshalGreg, I'm looking at the blue moon caissons, they look very nice.
