There are currently two Sherlocks on tv.
Sherlock and Elementry

So this isn't about the show, or even which Sherlock is the most true to the books.

But who do you like the most, who would you like to have a beer with?

I mean Cumberbatch's Sherlock is a nasty unpleasant man in all respects.
And while Miller's Sherlock difficulty can be an asshole, he at least seem more personable, he more clearly show he cares for Watson and the cops he works with.

So my vote is Miller's Sherlock.

Rathbone.

Rathbone. Then Jeremy Brett. Then Ronald Howard. Then Robert Downey Jr.

Peter Cushing – we could always talk gaming.

Christopher Lee – he can talk, I'll listen.

Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee. Not Benedict or Miller.

I love Cumberbatch the actor but the Sherlock concocted jointly by him, the writers, the show's creator is not interesting to me. The Sherlock as portrayed by Miller is better but there's room for improvement.

Grignotage10 Jan 2017 3:30 p.m. PST

I like Benedict's Sherlock, even if that show is often overwrought and filled plot-y THE BAD GUY KNEW ALL ALONG" and "SHERLOCK ANTICIPATED ALL OF THIS" shenanigans.

Jeremy Brett will ALWAYS be Holmes to me. All others are mere pretenders my dear Watson.

Bob the Temple Builder10 Jan 2017 5:09 p.m. PST

As far as I am concerned, Jeremy Brett is the definitive portrayal of Sherlock Holmes for my generation.

JMcCarroll10 Jan 2017 5:25 p.m. PST

Add another one for Jeremy Brett. He even looks like he does drugs.

dBerczerk10 Jan 2017 6:55 p.m. PST

I don't care for either of the actors portraying Sherlock Holmes currently on television.

The portrayal by Vasily Livanov in the Soviet version was pretty interesting (1979-1986). If you've never seen any of these, they're worth viewing.

Oohh, how could I forget Christopher Plummer!

His Holmes in "Murder by Decree" is one of the most genial and humane Holmes' on screen.

Narratio10 Jan 2017 8:04 p.m. PST

Rathbone from my youth, Brett from my middle age.

Green Tiger11 Jan 2017 2:27 a.m. PST

Miller – though I really don't care for Mycroft in the US series…

Ssendam11 Jan 2017 3:00 a.m. PST

I like Rathbone and Brett but … to answer the OP …

Cumberbatch's Sherlock

Only seen 1 episode of Elementary, Miller's voice put me off. Like Cumberbatch's version, the earlier episodes more than the more recent ones. Still prefer the Brett period versions.

Grew up watching Basil Rathbone films on BBC2, but quite happy watching both Sherlock and Elememtary. Both have a different style and take – Sherlock more updating the classic novels and Elementary more of a 'procedural' approach and there's room for both.

Didn't appreciate Jeremy Brett the first time around but enjoy watching the reruns now.

Michael Caine was the best
Then Jeremy Brett
of the 2 current TV
Miller

Oh yeah, Michael Caine in "Without a Clue"! Wonderful film.

Jeremy Bret and never Rathbone. I find most people who like Rathbone, have never seen Bret. He was the best ever. He spoiled me. I can't watch another. RIP Jeremy.

I liked Rathbone and Brett. Rathbone is at his best in "Hounds" and "Adventure." The rest are not very good. Brett is the closest to the Sherlock I read. I'd like to have a drink with Miller and dinner with Lucy Liu.

jgibbons11 Jan 2017 6:47 p.m. PST

Jeremy Brett for sure though I enjoy most Sherlock Holmes

Norman D Landings11 Jan 2017 8:14 p.m. PST

Rathbone. The role could have been written for him.
Brett was maybe as good, but by the time he came along Rathbone was long-established as Holmes for me.

Enjoyable-but-wrong: Tom Baker.

Honourable Mentions: Nicol Williamson & Christopher Plummer.

Best comedy Holmes: Peter Cook

Top casting trivia: Thorley Walters played Watson alongside four different Sherlocks.

Wulfgar11 Jan 2017 8:29 p.m. PST

Like many others, I'll always love watching Jeremy Brett play Holmes. He really defined the character for me. However, I like both apples and oranges, and I'm willing to keep an open mind to other characterizations. Benedict Cumberbatch is fun. Agree with Grtbrt that Michael Caine was very enjoyable.

Rathbone is the best effort to reproduce Doyle's character. But I'm voting for Ben Cumberbatch and his sidekick Martin Freeman. It's a very original re-interpretation, cleverly written, brilliantly performed, and obviously not meant to give us yet another attempt at replicating Doyle's classic character.

This is exactly why I take the other choice.

That's what Sherlock Holmes was like. Doyle hated him. Tried to kill him and was orced to resurrect. Ironically, the more he tried to make people hat the character, the more they wanted of him.

Weasel14 Jan 2017 8:07 a.m. PST

I like both of them.

Not as people I suppose but as a show.
