Any rules out there whereby a unit rolls 2d6 (or similar) in combat rather than buckets of dice? Thinking about a Lion Rampant dark ages game but replacing the 12 dice per unit with two.

Any suitable rule systems come to mind? Could also be 2d10, just anything with 2 dice or fewer.

We'll be using GMTs War Galley to re-fight Actium on Wednesday. That uses 2d6 to resolve the major combat issues.

All set up with 2 dice ready to go!

Twilight of the Sunking has NO combat dice! Everything resolved on morale throws using two average dice and some situation modifiers. We are now looking at modifying the system for Napoleonic "grand tactical" games.

Are you looking for something like, "Ten armored spearmen attacking unarmored peasants with a roll of a 7 is 3 casualties to the peasants." If so, you could modify charts from The Sword and the Flame, or use them as a template.

Lost Battles uses 2d6 for combat.

Et Sans Resultat resolves combat between infantry battalions and cavalry squadrons using 2D6 and a list of modifiers.

It would help if you specified a period. If your request is directed at Napoleonic rules, General de Brigade uses only 2d6. A great set of rules BTW.

King of the Battlefield, Eighteenth Century Wargames Rules uses two dice in combat.

You declare your target. The owner rolls the dice.
A d8 counts plus versus a d6 counting minus.
The target has the odds in his favour to role evens or more so you better be applying factors like flank shot, extra units, etc. Simple but effective.

Biggest game I know of involved 16 players on a 24ft tabletop. Each of us controlled about 40 units IIRC.
Can we go wider next time?

Another game was Fontenoy on an L shape table. Seven attackers v five defenders. That was lots of fun.

Enjoy,
Cavcmdr.

Huzzah! 2d6 since 2001… :-)

Does Squad Leader count? Fire is 2D6 roll low on a chart.
Target tests morale, also on 2D6.

My old "Fast And Dirty" rules set used 2D6, pick the highest for firing and close combat, to reduce chance a little bit.

Have you looked at Lammings Medieval Rules? If I recall everything in there was 2d6.

It also has a nice campaign system in there.

2D6 or 2D-anything always bothered me a bit because of the effect of the bell shaped curve on modifiers. If your target number is in the middle of the curve a +2 doesn't buy you twice the bonus of a +1 and +3 even less. If your target number moves up or down on the curve a +1 when trying for a "7" is much different than a +1 when trying for a "10". I know you can reason away the changing impact of modifiers, and I'm never one to say someone else's fun is all wrong, but can't help that it still bugs me. <shrug>

Classic Traveller uses 2d6 for "to hit" rolls, with 8+ after mods being a successful hit.
