I have used the spray Army Painter in good dry weather with good results. Those of us in the UK know that it is raining now and will probably be high humidity for months. So I am looking for an alternative that I can use when the atmosphere is damp. I have heard mixed reports about the vallejo acrylic bottles. Are these or any other products any good and how should I apply them? The current batch of models finishing up are metal 28mms primed in enamel, painted, hit with a floor stain wash then touched up. Where the floor stained bits are not overpainted the models are super shiny. In the Summer I would take them outside and hit them with spray matt then leave them in the warm.

I use Winsor & Newton Galeria varnish. It's available in matt, gloss and silk. I get mine from Hobbycraft.

Winsor and Newton Professional Matt Varnish spray is by far the best I've ever found, and I've tried most sprays.

Very forgiving in all atmospherics. Never had a bad can.

I get mine in 400ml cans from Pullingers.

Like Slugbalancer, I find the brush on varnishes from Winsor and Newton perfectly useable in the UK climate. I use the satin as a pre- coat before using "Magic Wash" (which produces a glossy protective finish, as well as the shading/ lining effect) and then brush on the matte varnish after 2 or 3 days. I have used sprays, but you need a dry clear day to spray outside, unless you are lucky enough to have a sealed and ventilated spray booth.

I use and believe Coat D'Arms matt varnish is superb.

The best spray on I've used is Humbrol 49 acrylic in cans.

Vallejo and Army Paints both do a good mat spray varnish.

I have been wargaming a long time, we use to gloss every think to make them hard wearing, I have used the above sprays and they have worked on these old glossed figures.

4th Cuirassier, you have no probables with Humbrol mat spray"frosting" on you ?

If you're not wedded to spraying I'd recommend Winsor and Newton Galeria too. Thousands of figures varnished and no 'frosting' issues at all.

I use Matt Clear under the Flair or Spectra branding. It's a range of spray cans sold in model car and aircraft shops and online. Perfectly matt, flexible and durable. I sprayed a whole army last week without a hint of a problem.

Another vote for Winsor and Newton….get mine from W.H Smiths!
