I have recently picked up a few boxes of plastic from various manufacturers with the intent to mix and match for some fantasy troops.

I am curious how people are approaching this.

In the past, I just sort of clipped them off the sprues as needed and glued them but I am wondering if it is better to clip everything and arrange it into sets before gluing?

I've done--entirely too many, lately. What's worked best for me is to clip all I have of a single torso, then only clip the arms (and/or legs) I need to use on those figures--and no more than I need for that number of figures. This ensures I get all the variety I want out of that torso. Once I've done all the torsos, I can go back and select things like heads and stray gear which might be attached to anyone.

Hmm. Worth noting that you need to decide before you start how many musicians, standard bearers, officers and such you're going to want in the finished product. Sometimes they can be used as rankers if you don't need specialized. Even if not, don't waste good gear on the "surplus" ones.

And now I'd better go assemble another 24 plastic cavalry. There are another 36 in line behind them, and something like another 150 infantry. Sometimes I pay too high a price for cheap.

The HYW Archers were a bitch to assemble. The arms never seemed to pair up right.

I cut all the pieces off the sprue and store them in what I call "bits boxess". I don't know what you call them really but they have compartments within the boxes seperated by dividers, the sort of thing you use for small parts and fishing lures. I sort them into general catagories like "heads", "left arms", "right arms", "hand weapons" and such.
