I've decided to put together an old school AD&D game for my project this year. I haven't played AD&D since the middle 80's, so it could be fun!!

Here is my first blog:

I had a couple of Olde School games over Christmas – they were great fun.

It's funny you post this. I've had a hankering to revisit AD&D 1st Edition for some time now, and even just bought a Monster Manual from e-bay which should be here next week!

Your set-up looks great. The point that it is unlikely for dungeons to have flagstones makes a good deal of sense – I'd never thought about it! Will you be actually role-playing, or will this basically be a skirmish game with minis? (Not that doing both isn't possible.)

Most inspiring – please keep us posted on your progress!

I run AD&D once in a while. I've been using Basic or 2nd Edition lately, but I think my next campaign (if I ever get a regular group again) will be 1st Edition.

Nice blog! I agree that adding sides to the dungeon isn't worth it. There are dungeon tiles and old-school battlemats available. But your terrain looks great!

I would like to role -play it, laying the dungeon out as the party explore. I expect this to be a campaign so the party will return several times to the dungeon – so it will naturally also become a bit of a skirmish game at times.

I have some tile sets – but I thought it would be a good project to make my own

Thanks for your comments

Very cool. 1st edition D&D, in 1977 is what started me on a lifetime of gaming.

As an old school D&D 1st ed. player from the late seventies, I will say the latest version is pretty good. Played it at a convention with my kids, then picked up the Starter set for more adventures. An excellent opportunity to break out the old minis

I've been playing a 1st edition AD&D campaign since 2009 – both tabletop and online.

I've since expanded it to be "Hyborian" in scope, with wargames and different play all over the campaign map, but at its heart, there's still AD&D.

Looks good.

Curious though – if you have AD&D, why are you moving to 2nd Edition ?

1st and 2nd Editions are mostly compatible. It's possible to use elements of both editions for your campaign. My preference between the two fluctuates constantly.

I have been doing the same thing. 1st and 2nd are compatible as tdkguy states, I do thing that 2nd edition cleaned up a lot of the clunky mechanics in how to do combat. Back in the late 70's and early 80's when I did 1st edition, it seemed that any group that I played with handled combat in a different way.
