Just took a look at the new Miniature Wargames, January 2017 issue, and found a review of Wally Simon's Skirmish Secrets of Wargame Design (this is the sixth volume in the series):

After an overview of the booklet format and listing the topics covered, MW noted:

"Thirteen individual game ideas with quite simple (but not simplistic) mechanics are included…They are an interesting selection of gaming nuggets: obviously the supply is finite but hopefully there are yet more for Mr. Lockwood to mine for future volumes."

-- Miniature Wargames No. 405, Jan 2017, page 6

With skirmish games growing in popularity, I'm pleased to see MW take a look at Volume 6 and more so that they came away with a favorable impression.

FYI: Wally passed away in 2005. He published PW Review monthly from the late 1970s to Aug 2002 -- about a half a dozen articles per issue. That's about 25 years x 12 issues per year = 300 issues, or around 1500 to 2000 articles in total. Granted, I cherry pick the best of them for each of the booklets, but I'm continually fascinated by Wally's (and friends') nuts and bolts examination of what mechanics make for a good -- or bad -- game.

For the record, the 13 articles in Vol 6 are:

* Gladiators Behaving Badly: Bluffing, Buffers, and a Quick Arena Campaign
* Goin' Commando: Falklands Raid: Stealth, Detection, and Demolition -- British commandoes attack an Argentinian airfield
* Victoria Colonial Skirmish Rules: Attributes, Cards, and d100s
* Samurai Skirmish: Archery, Windage, and Melee Bands
* Von Vorren's Machine Gun Duel: WWII East Front Skirmish -- Germans hold a farmhouse against the Soviets
* House-to-House Modern Skirmish: Reaction Deck, Wounded, and Response Deck -- a card system long before today's modern re-discovery
* Swath Fire: Volley Fire Variation: For Muskets Through Lasers
* Bash and Crash Medieval Melee: Agility, Strength, and Reactions
* Command and Control Cards: Activation with a Twist
* Hey Pilgrim! You Forgot Your Popgun: Wild, Wild West Shootout -- Posse tracks down the gang
* Zgroshk Modern Skirmish: Clocking, Wounds, and Reserve
* Ragnar's Viking Raid: Fast, Simple, and Chartless Rules
* 23rd Century Urban Uprising: Dicing, Reaction, and Rally Rolls -- The People Revolt Against Tyranny
