I've always been a fan of 25mm figures. I was delighted when I started out that I could "do" actual important battles on an average table top with a manageable number of units at a comfortable 1:20 figure scale. When I took a break from the hobby and came back, all the cool kids were gaming with 28mm figures. Cool. As far as I was concerned, there was no problem mixing them. So I am firmly in the 25/28mm scale camp for AWI gaming. What do you prefer and why? Need I say that there are no wrong answers? |
Waco Joe | 04 Jan 2017 11:12 a.m. PST |
Well the only ones I have are 54mm so I guess I will go with that. Why? I am not that big on the period but I played a game using All The King's Men and enjoyed the rules. So being my usual manic self I dove in with a bunch of Armies in Plastic boxes and painted them up over a couple of weekends. Just something to break out of the ordinary. |

This period is perfect for 25/28mm. |

25/28. I started with 15mm and sold them off after I decided the uniforms just looked poor compared to what I could do in a larger scale |

I went in with a friend on the beautiful Sash and Saber 40mm's,to do some smaller games in a bigger scale. Then,in the course of reading up on the period again, I itched to do some bigger games in a smaller scale. Got a deal on a pile of Old Glory 10mm's. So both for me. |

My second choice is 40mm. The ones I have are fantastically detailed. They aren't that expensive and the same things I said about table size apply. |
Brechtel198 | 04 Jan 2017 11:39 a.m. PST |
54mm-and I have found that Imrie/Risley design and produce the best 54mm figures on the market-infantry, cavalry, and artillery. |

25/28 mm figures. I like to be able to see what I am gaming with. |
KSmyth | 04 Jan 2017 12:17 p.m. PST |
28mm. The figures available are so varied compared to when I began gaming. Winston is right about table size and scale, though I confess that I prefer base of four figures equals 50 men. |
Yellow Admiral | 04 Jan 2017 12:20 p.m. PST |
I actually agree that this period is excellently suited for 25/28mm, but I am committed to 15mm for a variety of reasons and I'm perfectly happy with that scale. All that said, my first choice would be 1/72 plastic, if it were possible to get the full variety of poses, uniforms, nationalities, etc. But I'm not starting over. :-) - Ix |

Hello Winston Smith! Baccus 6mm, the sculpts are just amazing for this scale. In fact for any scale. More importantly is the game dynamics. You can build your units to any size you want, 1-1, 5-1, 20-1, etc. Play any engagement you want, make it look as big or as small as you want. What could be better? Best regards, Glenn |

Brechtel, I've got to ask: do you have units of the Imrie/Risley? Lovely figures, but at $17 USD per foot figure that's a hefty investment! |

I got into AWI only in the past few years. I have Foundry, Perry and Fife.and Drum. I play on a 12 x 6 foot table. Matthew |

28mm Fife and Drum for Skirmish. 10mm Old Glory for large battles (Well, as large as they get!) |

I'll have to go with 54s since that is what I own. I like 25s, but I also think 1/72 has a lot going for it for this conflict. |

28mm would be an ideal scale for this conflict. That's why all mine are in 15mm. If starting afresh I would probably go for the 28mm gargoyle scale but I already have at least 1000+ 15mm, so I am not. It looks and plays great in 15mm too. After saying this the ECW also is just the right size conflic to benefit from the use of 28mm and there I also had them in 15mm but DID replicate my army in 28. So it is still a possibility sometime. |

Brechtel, I've got to ask: do you have units of the Imrie/Risley? Lovely figures, but at $17 USD USD per foot figure that's a hefty investment! Yes, they are expensive, but I consider them worth every penny. I started collecting them when I was in the 8th grade (a long time ago) when they were $2.00 USD for a foot figure. I have assembled an infantry battalion with an attached artillery company and a detachment of light dragoons, about 200 figures which I used to illustrate the Continental Army in the classroom. The horses are superb and even though they are expensive, they are completely worth it. |

My choice would be 18mm. I can paint them much faster than I can 28mm and could play a reasonable game on a small table. In 15/18mm you can leave a lot off fussy details of the uniform that saps time and units can be more generic and thus flexible in their use. I also think the small scale makes the terrain much easier to make. |

I have 18mm (Blue Moon/Old Glory) AWI for larger scale battles, while my 25mm work well in small-scale skirmish games. |

28mm for me as I feel the scale fits in perfect for the conflict. Christopher |

15mm for figs and 10mm buildings for when playing brigade or larger size games. We also have 25mm for playing skirmish games. |

I have both sides in small 20mm by Frying Pan & Blanket. If I had it to do over again, I'd do it in 15mm because the selection of figures is better and most of my other armies are 15mm. If Frying Pan would ever actually finish their projected Hessian jagers… |

Another vote for Baccus 6mm. I can do large 40+ figure units that really look linear and I can buy lots of different types of troops (British Line, Lights,m Grenadiers, Highlanders, Hessians, Jaegers, Loyalists) without breaking the bank. |

2mm for 1:1 gaming. I love the look; a regiment in line LOOKS like a regiment in line, a long narrow strip of humanity. Flags are small squares of color in the center of the line, not huge things dominating the regiment. I have my 25mm, but they are display pieces, relegated to the shelf to impress the ladies. And the heckling starts in 3..2…1… :0) |

25/28mm. Would consider 15mm but absolutely would not consider anything larger or (shudder) smaller scale. |
