HG- A bit of advice….

LIGHTEN UP!!! This isn't the end of the flippin' world…

I started to read this thread and after a while it seemed like I would be better off watching Whitney Houston videos.

So I'll take that as you haven't done anything.

Perhaps to those of us that have, it does matter. Not keeping me up at night, but I don't see it helping the society or the conventions. The attendance numbers would seem to back me up.

Perhaps capncarp has volunteered to work for the organization? Maybe Bowman too?

And for those of us that have volunteered a lot of time – including helping to judge games and handing out awards on behalf of the society, it does matter. No doubt someone will make fun of that program too, as apparently nothing matters to some of you. Got it.

I just see it as more drift, lack of focus, with resulting loss in attendance and relevance to those who were interested in what HMGS was founded to do.

And for the record, I prefer boxers. So I can't comment on wearing malfunctioning women's underwear. I'll defer to those more expert on the subject. :-)

And after reading the last two august, pompous posts, I am in full agreement with you….

HG- As for the the important issue of malfunctioning undergarments (and have no doubt, it can indeed be of great import) it would appear from the tone and tenor of your stern and solemn posts, that yours are at least two sizes too small…. grin

Lol
I am really enjoying this post

capncarp13 Jan 2017 10:58 p.m. PST

Panties? Panties? What are these "panties", and how are they relevant to this topic. And who would wear suxlch ludicrous self-imolating garments on purpose anyway???

Charlie 1213 Jan 2017 11:04 p.m. PST

Egads, capncarp! You're worse than I thought! Going "commando", are we?!?!? You're DEFINITELY Room 101 material!!

Bowman14 Jan 2017 5:11 a.m. PST

Facts? Okay, here you go. From the HMGS webpage:

"HMGS, Inc. is a non-profit, charitable and educational 501(c)3 organization whose purpose is to promote the study of military history through the art of tabletop miniature wargaming."

Very interesting. You do trot this quote out on other threads too…..so we remember. So what? Once in a blue moon, I'll bring out some historical and non-historical figures and play a VSF game at a HMGS con. Sue me.

But of course, you are all right. I mean with the growth of such games, and now the inclusion of sci fi and fantasy theme games, we'll be seeing more record numbers attend and these games will help fulfill the corporation's mission. No?

What do you mean by, "…..and now with the inclusion of sci fi and fantasy games….."?

I've been coming to HMGS conventions for only about 20 years now and there have always been non-historical games. I would suspect the presence of these games have no effect on convention attendance. Like me, those putting on non-historical games are inherently historical gamers that branch out once in a while. A glance at the GM's names from your own post of 10 Jan 2017 5:50 p.m. PST will corroborate this.

Well, maybe they encourage more people interested in military history to attend? No?

Who knows?

Oh, right. It's what you want. Got it.

It's what we want? What would that be? Other than more projection on your part. What I want is for the HMGS conventions to be very successful. I would assume that is not different from your own wishes. I just seem to not get as worked up over supposed themes for playing with toy soldiers. As LoiusCK says, "Your life must be awesome in order to make s*** up to be upset about".

I am curious Charlie. Can you tell us all what positions within HMGS you have volunteered for? I'm just trying to understand your contributions to the organization and what it might mean to you.

In logic, that is what is known as a non-sequitur.

It also smells suspiciously like an ad hoc attack.

You could make the argument that all the tactics and combat in fantasy and sci-fi games are designed to emulate man's own long history of warfare over the ages.

You also cannot know what effect these numbers have on attendance. No one is forcing anyone to play anything they don't want to play.

Page 2 filled up rather quickly. You guys have been busy.

As promised, some more numbers from the Cold Wars 2017 PEL:

By my count, of the 278 events listed, 56 of them were marked "Theme" by the GMs who submitted them.

Of the 56 Theme events, 44 are historical and 12 are SciFi/Fantasy games.

Two of the 12 SciFi/Fantasy games are on Sunday ("Eat Hitler" and "Christmas Comes to Schlegel's Ferry").

Of the 7 Sunday games, 2 are SciFi/Fantasy, both of which were submitted as "Theme" games by their respective GMs.

Draw your own conclusions.

Ceasefire over. I look forward to Walt's Guidebook post, which usually includes a breakdown of games by category, something I'll pass on doing. I've spent more than enough time on this already. Time to start packing figures and terrain for my games.

Enjoy the games. Hope to see you there.

"It also smells suspiciously like an ad hoc attack."

Let's make that an _ad hominem_ attack. Sorry, all the Latin I know I learned from bad movies, my godchildren, and Monty Python ( Romanes eunt domus!)

Poniatowski16 Jan 2017 8:55 a.m. PST

Ok, The PEL is up, was up for a week now.
There have been a few event cancellations and a few changes/corrections to times/days, etc…

We also have an addendum coming out that has 24 additional events added.

You will see this shortly.

Events are not listed in the reg system as YM has not uploaded the original file yet. We are all waiting anxiously.

When they go live, you will all know ASAP. I am sorry for any delays or inconvenience. This is out of events hands at the moment.

thor52116 Jan 2017 3:48 p.m. PST

Thanks Dan for the update
Do you know if the newly added games will be highlighted or have asterisk to denote they are new
