More exactly, "The British Invasion of the River Plate", by the above author. I picked it up at my local university library, as I had run out of Peninsula and Waterloo books to read and am pleasantly surprised.
Smaller forces, including numerous opportunities for individual and small unit feats of derring and doo! Hard-bitten professional (but outnumbered) Brits vs passionate, but amateur Spanish colonials with ad hoc units – volunteers, militia and a few regulars.
Plots, treachery, cabals, smuggling, daring escapes – everything you could want for a skirmish / role playing campaign. Naval action, amphibious landings, recces, formal military battles a siege and house to house fighting.
The Brit in me wishes that it had turned out differently, but true patriotism and love of liberty won out over brutal invasion. (Damn!!!)
You could game it in 28mm with the Perry Egyptian campaign Brits and Carlist civilians. And I am wondering if the Brigade Games Spanish militia and guerillas would fit in as well??
