I'm considering a new project for 2017, 28mm Ancients. I'd like to start with a matched set of opponents for DBA and maybe expand into different rule sets. What I'm not decided upon is which armies to build, so I'm looking for recommendations. Here are my criteria: 1) At least one, somewhat documented battle between the two sides. There doesn't have to be a lot of recorded details, just a name and result. So no obscure pre-Columbian SouthAmerican tribes 2). The two armies should be different enough to be immediately distinguished from each other. No Sparta vs. Thebes or Roman Civil War 3) No pikes. I'm just finishing up my Italian Wars forces and 400 Landsknechts and Swiss are enough for a lifetime. Anybody want to nominate some armies for my consideration? Feel free to try and sell me on them if you feel strongly enough about them.

Rome versus Carthage. There is a great deal of information on battles, the armies are very different; lots of 'regular' infantry with some cav on one side against a colorful assortment of mercenary foot and more cav on the other, plus elephants ( or chariots if you go early)! And no pikes!! |

Rome vs Carthage is a good one. Another might be a Later Imperial Roman army vs. Sassanid Persian. Some exotic troop types and you can really change up your Roman lists. Dave |

Lately we've been enjoying Late Romans vs Goths, Franks, & Huns in 28mm. Gripping Beast has a box of plastic Roman infantry that has enough foot for a Late Roman army. Gripping Beast also has a box of Dark Age warriors that you can use for most Barbarian types of the period. Huns are another good choice. Old Glory may be the most cost effective: 2 bags of Horse Archers will give you 10 elements of Light Horse for DBA. |

I would go with 2nd Punic War. Lots of info and some cool army lists for sure. |

The Crusades are colorful and have two different styles of armies clashing. |

I would also go with Kadesh. Very colourful and interesting. Nice and cheap too if using Newline Designs. |

Another vote for Carthage vs. Rome. My Carthaginians are on my finish list this year. |

Greeks v Persians Republican Rome v Carthage Imperial Rome v Gauls, Boudicca, Dacians or Parthians. Late Rome or Byzantine v Goths, Huns or Eastern empires No pikes knocks out Macedonians and Successors As for my personal resolution –
Finish the ones I resolved to finish in 2014 (Montmirail – 95% done), 2015 (Barons War – 25% done) and 2016 (Raphia – 50% done). Or my wife leaves me. |

I just started early Imperial Rome vs. Gauls and/or Germanics. In 28mm. Rome is fun, and the Gauls can satisfy any painters desire for variety. |
