link Just before the New Year we had another crack at General de Brigade and my 15 year search for Napoleonic Rules (after my Hard Pounding Computer Rules died) continued. I've covered the basics of the Scenario in the blog post along with Orbats and a brief AAR and lots of lovely pics. GdeB is so nearly there but as a Quarrie man I miss the Nationalist Characteristics, I have a cunning plan to add them in but with so many other gaming plans it's a case of when. Which version of GdB were you playing? There was some significant streamlining that happened between v2 and "Deluxe" (v3). I'm curious if this hurt, helped, or made no difference to your effort. Or if you weren't even aware of the changes. :-) I would sort of expect v3 to be easier to adjust to a different figure ratio, since the figure counting moved to breakpoints and away from math-on-the-fly. The "national characteristics" are indeed missing, but shouldn't be that hard to bolt on once you get familiar with the system. GdB is at its core a pretty straightforward set of rules without many subtly interleaved dependencies. OTOH, adding national characteristics may also be totally unnecessary if you just skew the scales of unit and leader ratings (which is probably what D. Brown expects). I set out to do the same sort of thing you propose to RF&F, when I started using it for the AWI. I discovered that it was easier and more "natural" to define units, leaders and special cases within the context of the existing rules (e.g. Jägers have rifles, are "marksmen", "have bayonets" (swords), and I always rate them in the upper reaches of the morale/training scales). I expect the same sort of thing to be true of GdB. - Ix |

PS: nice looking game. Did you paint all 6000 of those lovely figures? |

Hi Yellow Admiral, We started with the 1st edition but the last game was with the Deluxe version. The National Characteristics is a hang over from my Quarrie days, I enjoy the subtle variations between nations and unit types, the differences may be small but it just "feels" right. I think it will be a relatively straightforward conversion by taking out some of the factors in GdeB and replacing with the Quarrie factors but as I say in the post it's a question of time to sort it out. I painted most of my Naps although some have been bought, it's was my first love and still contains some figures I painted when I was 12, I'm 49 in a couple of weeks so the collection has had plenty of time to mature ! Remounting 6000 figs, for a set of rules does not make sense unless you desire larger size units ( more figs to the unit, that is- which i am in the middle of doing). Remake the QRS(of GdB) to the scale of your fig ratio. Math is not that hard to do it and most word DOcs can get you a good presentation. Best yet- take serious look and invest in the Carnage and gloryII. It does not care of figure ratio. They are very elegant rules and have a good following and support! I play in the author's game pretty regularly! MG 2 cents MG |
