I am newly retired and started a new hobby. I am gathering and paining 25mm pirates, mostly for dioramas. I have just over 100 pirates done, along with a few dozen civilians. I am using Old Glory figurines atm. I have more pirates ordered and am starting on the British. I am planning on a 4' x 8' table roughly half land with a Spanish Main type waterfront villiage, and half open water – with a couple of small islands in the remote corners. Should give me room for sea battles. I am interested in doing some gaming. But having no experience in gaming I don't know how to start (like how do you use the dice?) I live on a small rural property about 40 miles out from the city – so I'm on my own. Lol So any ideas where to begin will be helpful! Thanks in advance, - Dutch |

Many free rules are available, one of the best sources if the freewargamesrules wiki. One option is offered here. link I use the "And a bottle of Rum" set which is now available from Wargamesvault but it isn't free. link |

Find a rule set you think you might like. (or ask here for suggestions) Read some battle reports…some just describe the action, but others will explain the dice rolls and how the game works (these seem to be harder to find). Ask questions on the forums here, you'll catch some flak, but there's enough people willing to help that it should prove useful. Now some questions for you: How long do you want a game to last? How much time do you plan on devoting to a game? How many figures are you planning on using per side? Your first games should be pretty small until you get the hang of your chosen rules. The more you play, the less you have to look up and the faster you'll get. Do you like rolling lots of dice, or just a few? Does looking up info on charts bother you? |

Definitely look over the free wargames site above mentioned by Buff. Then there's my favorites: link The Two Hour Wargames series. Try the free ones (probably Swordplay and the how-to at link Since you're stuck out in the middle of nowhere, the solo play will come in handy. |

I'd have a look at the less expensive options rather than just the free ones. See what's available at Wargame Vault, for example. I can recommend the Fistful of Lead: Horse and Musket rules for the sort of game you are looking for. Very suitable for beginners and can be played solo easily. link |

If it's free why do they want info to set up a PayPal account? I cancelled it. Thanks anyway! . |

Because it's a e-commerce site (you'll have the same problem at wargamevault.com with their free offerings). Tell you what, post a question on link (their forum). Ed's probably online and I think you'll be surprised at the level of customer service he provides. Or send me a private email at stryderg at netcape dot net I'll forward it to Ed for you or see if I can download a copy for you. |
