A while back someone posted a suggestion for Uniform and Facing colors to get started in AWI gaming. Does anyone recall that post? The author gave combinations that would give variety but remaining historically accurate. Thanks for any help KvH |

Are you talking about the post someone listed the common facing colors of British units? Instead of painting up each historical unit, all you needed was several painted up in this combination? |

Yes Admiral, thanks ever so much. |

If it helps, I worked out the break-down of facing colours for the British battalions that fought in the war's main battles. Leaving out the highland regiments and the Guards, the tally was as follows: - Yellow: 12; - Buff: 6; - Dark Green: 4; - Dark Blue: 4; - White: 3 (17th, 43rd and Marines); - Green: 2 (5th and 54th); - Red: 1 (33rd); - Orange: 1 (35th); - Black: 1 (64th). So yellow/ochre/variants thereof was the predominant facing colour of the British troops. Of the buff-faced regiments, only two, the 40th and 52nd, saw extensive service (the 3rd arrived close to the end and the 22nd and 62nd saw limited action). Some battalions appear more regularly in the orbats than others, and so are good ones to paint up: e.g. 33rd (red); 52nd (buff); 37th, 44th (yellow); 49th, 55th, 63rd (dark green). The 71st is the most ubiquitous of the highland regiments, and so a useful one to do early on. |

That's cool! You should post this list to John the OFM's thread so that we only have to bookmark one TMP thread. :-) I also recommend the old CWG booklet The Whites of Their Eyes as a good, cheap starter resource. It includes a table of uniform colors for most of the prominent regiments serving in the war. - Ix |

Giles' post is useful in that he notes the prominent "go-to" British regiments. I once made a chart of regiments from consulting orders of battle in published Wargames scenarios. Not exactly "primary source" research, is it? I lost those papers a while back. But he has the gist of it. My original "research" in the 70s led me to paint the 38th Foot first. Primarily because I found paintings in separate books on the hatmen, lights, Grenadiers and flag (which I hand painted). Unfortunately, they were not all that prominent, but they were my yellow facings regiment. |

Gilo: Good info, thanks. I second adding this to John's old thread. |

Thanks – I'll add to John's thread if he's ok with that. |

I'm fine with it. I would like to see a provision where "useful" threads can stay st the top of the Message Boards listing. Btw it's no secret that John the OFM and Winston Smith are the same person on different devices. |
