What were the French and HRE involved with while the English, Scots, and Welsh were knocking each other about? I know about the Burgundians and Swiss, but there had to be some other possible hot spots that would make for some good gaming. |

From late 12th into the early 14th century France was fighting the Flemish and other people's from low countries area. A little later early 15th century the HRE and others where fighting the Hitites in Bohemia |

Hussites in Bohemia… the Hitites were a bit before and over towards the east.:) The French were also busy in the Medeveil period crusading against Cathar heretics in the south of France. |

ok. Thanks. I have a bunch of WOTR figures and and want to get away from all the longbow duels. Looking for some good what ifs or real conflicts I may not have stumbled upon yet. |

By the mid to late 15th century, the French are also putting out a fairly sizeable force of archers though they generally get a poor press. You have the real start of the French vs. Empire bashes from Guinegatte in 1479. Something which might interest is the War of the League of Public Weal which is really a French civil war but involves Charles the Bold before he became duke and also various non-French contingents. Another possible is the tussle between Frederick the HRE and Charles the Bold over Neuss. If you want to go further afield then there is the fighting between Frederick and Mathias Corvinus of Hungary. Mainly sieges I think, but then most medieval conflict was. |

Thanks Swampster. Yes saw something on the Public Weal. Looks interesting and possibly expandable. I will look into the 1479 HRE v. French. Thanks. |

During the first half of the 15th century, the contest for the throne of France was a three-way one, not just England vs France. The Armagnac–Burgundian Civil War. The crusade against the Ottomans at the end of the 14th century, producing the battle of Nicopolis (a great scenario for a wargame), is heavily French, with a small English and Military Orders participation, along with Hungarian allies……….. |

I have a bunch of WOTR figures and and want to get away from all the longbow duels. Looking for some good what ifs or real conflicts I may not have stumbled upon yet. If you are looking for opportunities to field your English against French, there is the conquest of Normandy and Gascony in 1450-1453 where the English got a good kicking in battles of Formigny and Castillon. There is also the 1475 English expedition to France, which in the end did not lead to any major clashes but should make for some pretty good what-if actions – especially since Bretons and Burgundians were also expected to join in the action. There may have also been a further planned English expedition in 1490's that never materialised. As for the French actions at the time, they ended up fighting against Burgundians in the War of the Public Weal, and also again in the 1470's when Charles had become the duke (though this mostly involved capturing towns back and forth along Somme). And after Charles was gone they ended up fighting with his heir Maximillian over the control of Burgundian Low Countries – resulting in the previously mentioned battle of Guinegate. As for other actions in France, there is also the conflict between the royal crown and the rather autonomous duchy of Bretagne, which eventually ends up in the defeat of Bretons. Finally, there is the French invasion of Italy starting in 1494, which leads to the major battle at Fornovo next year. Original French plan was to launch a further expedition against Ottomans from southern Italy – while this did not materialise in the end, it might make for a further what-if scenario. |
