What rules would be suggested for skirmish type games including Dr Who and his various enemies ?

BT have a great range of aliens and enemies, but the DWMG rules are a bit clunky for a skirmish. I find the same for GASLIGHT. 7TV is OK, but the 'plot driven' format doesn't make for pick-up type skirmishes. Likewise IHMN needs quite a bit of prep and the attributes slow the action down.

Is there a variant for Black Powder or Bolt Action ?

Is there anything in the Osprey range that might work ?

Other suggestions welcome.

TIA

Pete

I use 7TV quite happily. Not sure what you mean by "pick type skirmishes"?

Guthroth01 Jan 2017 1:56 p.m. PST

I meant Pick-up. A more battle type game.

Surely the whole point of a game based on Dr Who would require a plot driven format?

The 7TV rules work fine for a straight up fight.

I'd use 7TV. The first one for more (dare I say it) "realistic" games and with ignoring some of the TV specific, 4th wall stuff; 7TV2 if I wanted to play actual episodes of a TV show, if you see what I mean.

I've had a similar problem trying to find rules for doctor who.

Buck Surdu, one of the GASLIGHT, authors used those rules for doctor who. And when I emailed him and asked what changes he'd made, he said he had to swap the story and action around.

War games are inherently action oriented, and doctor who is story driven, with the action being secondary. So they kind of don't mix well. Buck said he had to make the storyline secondary, and keep the action primary.

Here's the LAF thread where it's discussed

I rather liked the DWMG rules though if you have a lot of figures, it gets a bit busy.

Laserburn works.

Depending upon the type and size of game wanted, I have used Tomorrow's World and Pulp Alley.

In a skirmish game, the Doctor can be problematic. Is he just a non-combatant who sneaks sround and invents things? Not a significant skirmush role.

A clash with Daleks (care with the version and power level), Cybernen, Sontarrans and UNIT can be fun. If you want, add the War Doctor.

Would nt Pulp Alley work well for Dr Who and any other story driven games??

Norrins02 Jan 2017 3:26 p.m. PST

I used Pulp Alley many times for Dr Who – in fact last used it on New Years Eve for a game.

Here's a solo game AAR – link

Nice work on your leagues. But where's the 5th Doctor? I also noticed the 8th Doctor isn't there either, but he didn't appear on TV for very long.

I also have a few Doctor Who miniatures, the first six except for #4, which I lost in the dorms in college.

I ran a Dr Who game using GASLIGHT on New Year's Eve. As Black Cavalier states, part of a good Dr Who game, regardless of what rules you use, is to realize that the Dr should actually be in the background solving clues, while other folks fight the battle.
For a report on the game, and how I handled the Doctor's puzzle solving, please see my blog: link

@tkdguy I have two 5th Doctor leagues, so I'll have to get those added. As for the 8th Doctor, I have a league for him but it's very much influenced by a RPG campaign I did with him. So the companions are very much non canon.

I've found Norrins stuff really inspiring, but that's a great looking table Chris!

Thanks, boy wundyr!

I've always had a soft spot for Christmas-themed games, so this is right up my alley. The presence of the Doctor only makes it better.

Your board really does look smashing.

Thank you, Gone Fishing! I too am a fan of Christmas themed games (as you can probably tell! grin )

Here's the AAR from the game I had earlier this week.

Thanks again for sharing, Norrins. I enjoyed reading the AAR.
