This is a book I go back to often for ideas and to try new things. (That could be said of all Neil Thomas books I have) but "Intro" is a real gem. |

I have played a few games with the Second World War Wargaming rules in that book, using Flames of War based troops, and it worked well. More on my blog. link |

A must have for anyone wanting to get started in a new era or in gaming in general. If you want to get your kids into historical gaming this how to do it. |

It is a great introduction to wargaming. That is what it was written for. Neil covers quite a bit of territory regarding the different types of rules very succinctly. He does tackle wargame issues well, along with Dickie. However, keep in mind that the book is ten years old. |

His rules are a progression of his thought over time. (Example, he initially went with wheeling, but now has settled on pivoting.) I feel like he intends one unit per face in all of his rules, even when he forgets to explicitly mention it. There is nothing that changed in the technology or the way warfare is conducted that would justify changing that core rule, starting in Napoleonic times. |

One attacker per face makes it much easier to convert the rules to squares as well:) |

Neil Thomas wrote an article in Battlegames Issue 22 which fully outlines his simple approach to wargaming. It is well worth a read. In issue 23 he publishes "Simplicity in Practice." Issue 22 link Issue 23 link between the 2 articles, you can divine exactly what he meant in his other rules. |
