Why not just put it up on a web site or blog.

Skeets Supporting Member of TMP31 Dec 2016 3:49 p.m. PST

Just finished reading it-a good beginning and I am looking forward to the next.

Greg Horne31 Dec 2016 4:03 p.m. PST

MajorB,

Who knows, we might. In your opinion, how would that be better than what we are doing?

Skeets,

We're glad you like it. More to come at the end of March.

Cheers,

Greg

Got my copy and physically it looks great. A more in-depth review after I read through it this weekend. I suggest fellow TMP'ers snag a copy ASAP!

For those of us who haven't subscribed, is there a place that describes what this is?

keithbarker01 Jan 2017 4:05 a.m. PST

I agree with MajorB, "Why not just put it up on a web site or blog."

What are you going to do with all the email addresses you collect?

Do you have a privacy policy?

parrskool01 Jan 2017 4:10 a.m. PST

This is a really good read… takes me back to my youth and Wargamers Newsletter…. but this is even better. Many congratulations.

Requests by email might be OK for a few readers, but if you want a readership of hundreds then it doesn't scale.

I really enjoyed the first issue, which recaptures much of the flavour of the old Wargamer's Newsletter and the days when the hobby was not so commercialised. Looking forward to Number 2 very much.

Ottoathome01 Jan 2017 8:40 a.m. PST

Greg Horne and Stokes Schwartz have done something wonderful here. They have attempted to recreate a bit of the old time enthusiasm for the hobby without the commercialism and pseudo-historical cant of the other magazines. This is obviously a labor of love and a pure good for the hobby and a selfless act of service to gamers on their part. They certainly do not rate the carping of people who are too stingy to even pony up an e-mail address. If it's too much for you to simply ASK for it, then you don't deserve to get it.

parrskool01 Jan 2017 10:10 a.m. PST

Ottoathome………dead right. Quite agree.

stingy etc etc

An understandable response if you aren't computer-savvy.

Internet security, identity theft, hacking are real things. Not to mention "spam" :

This might get you started, Otto:

I think this is a fair question where naivity won't save you.

keithbarker02 Jan 2017 5:01 a.m. PST

@Ottoathome

I have no idea if it's wonderful or not, because I haven't seen it. But lets take your word for it.

It obviously should be distributed far and wide and available to all interested wargamers. And there could be a lot of them.

The send-me-an-email-and-i'll-send-you-one-back model will not give them the reach they deserve.

To increase reach they could…

* put the PDF's on a web site or blog for free and easy download.

* have a web site where you can subscribe to Wargamer's Notes in the same way as you subscribe to a newsletter (with a privacy policy of course)

* put Wargamer's Notes on a web shop such as drivethrurpg with a price of "pay what you want", that would even help towards their costs

Gone Fishing02 Jan 2017 7:41 a.m. PST

So my resistance crumbled and I sent them my e-mail. And it really is quite splendid, just as the posters above say. Many, many thanks to both of you for putting it out.

Highly recommended!

Daryl

Once again it's the same Deleted by Moderator who are complaining.

And, once again, those who see a different way of doing things are subjected to scornful epithets.

Tsk, tsk.

daler240D03 Jan 2017 4:44 a.m. PST

While Greg can distribute it any way he pleases, especially since it is free, I don't view it as "carping" when someone makes a constructive suggestion about how to increase distribution. The more the merrier I think in our hobby, particularly for the niche of old school devotees. THAT being said, the paranoia about giving out your email address is a bit melodramatic. My advice to those is to have more than one email address and use one for personal people you trust like friends and family and a separate one for hobbies etc and another for business.
All that being said, thanks a lot to Greg for this. This is what makes the hobby great.

Greg Horne07 Jan 2017 3:11 a.m. PST

Thanks for the comments gentlemen. They're all appreciated each in their different ways and for the different things they bring to the discussion.

At the moment we're a small operation with not a huge mailing list. Other distribution models will be considered if we feel we need to look at it.

It's probably a little dated an idea, but a blog with a link to Google Drive is one idea I've been turning over. A blog might also let us engage more freely with our audience, although I would miss the friendly back-and-forth of email.

Thanks again,

Greg
