Which wargaming show in Canada do you think is the best?

Hitman28 Dec 2016 2:31 p.m. PST

Hotlead in Stratford, Ontario. A great show put on by great people. James Manto is the chief in charge of this show and he never lets anyone down. The rest of the staff, including his lovely wife work very hard to put on a great show year after year.

Hitman

Cangames in Ottawa.

Well my opinion is heavily biased.

Although I've heard good things about Cangames and also Trumpeter out in British Columbia.

I would be interested to hear the opinions of someone who has been to both Cangames and Hotlead

I've only ever been to Trumpeter in Vancouver (Burnaby) so I'm prejudiced. It is a good convention. Our group usually puts on 4 or 5 games. I can post some pics if anyone is interested?

I live near Seattle and have been to both Hot Lead and Trumpeter. Hot Lead was extremely welcoming but I have to give the edge to games at Trumpeter.

Mike Mayes28 Dec 2016 10:52 p.m. PST

The question is specifically about best wargames show in Canada. I have been to both Cangames and Hot Lead.

They are both well organized and full of friendly people but I give the edge to Stratford's Hot Lead – better venue and more wargames. Cangames has more variety – RPGs, board games, etc.

Cannot comment on Trumpeter, but hope to check it out one day.

I would love to see some pictures. I live on Vancouver Island and I can never seem to get it organised to make it over. The website doesn't have much of a gallery.

I remember a Convention in Hamilton, Ontario at the Royal Connaught Hotel, which just happened to be directly across the street from an exotic dancing establishment. Those were the days boys… those were the days!

willthepiper29 Dec 2016 8:52 a.m. PST

I've been to both Hotlead and Trumpeter; both are great conventions but as they are about 4000 km apart they are not exactly in in competition with each other!

I'd also like to show some support for a couple of good conventions in the great empty space in between Ontario and BC. Fallcon in Calgary is a fantastic event, while Edmonton's MayDay is a little smaller but makes up for it with a very friendly and welcoming crew.

I've heard of but not attended Tooncon in Saskatoon, and I'm sure there are others not yet mentioned.

I have been to both Trumpeter & Fallcon… both had great games, lots of fun.

Hafen von Schlockenberg30 Dec 2016 10:16 a.m. PST

wrgmr 1,great pics! All: do the Canadian cons feature more US style participation games,or UK style "demonstration" games (something I've never quite understood)?

I ask because I may find myself living in Vermont in the future.

willthepiper30 Dec 2016 10:35 a.m. PST

Hafen: My experience from attending cons in Ontario, Alberta and BC is that all of them focus on encouraging attendees to participate in a game. All have one-off games but several will also feature tournaments (DBA, Warhammer etc). At every table (ok, more likely ALMOST every table) someone will look up at anyone watching and ask: "do you want to join us?"

wrgmr130 Dec 2016 10:10 p.m. PST

Trumpter has all participation games. Sign up for a game in each period. But if you really want to play, usually the games master will fit you in.

Bowman31 Dec 2016 7:56 a.m. PST

I have been to a few different conventions, all in Ontario. I have never seen a "demonstration" game either. Don't understand the point, to be honest.

wrgmr1, the pictures lof all the games look great., but that Samurai castle is phenomenal!

boy wundyr x03 Jan 2017 8:47 a.m. PST

Yes, even the games being hosted by a games company/rule writer are participation games.

I've been to Hotlead and think it's great, I've also been to some of the fun smaller cons around southern Ontario and they're good fun too. I plan to get to Cangames this year; Trumpeter may be a stretch but I'm just glad there are cons available where people want them (although the maritimes and Quebec may be underserved?).
