Doing some planning for a WW1 project and I'm not sure how many 10mm figures on a 30x30mm base. Any opinions? I'll be going for a look that's not tight formations but instead a bit spread out.

I would say 3-4 but this is not one of my periods.

I used 3 for 1918 armies.

For my planned 1914 armies I'm considering 4 if using Pendraken figures. However, if I use Kallistra figures it might be 3 again.

I'd go with 4 probably. They'll have some spacing between them and still look like a "unit".
3 would be fine if you want to stretch them a bit further.

Cool guys, thanks much. Will be using Pendraken so I'll probably go with 4 except for things like engineer units that I'll do in 3 for differentiation.

I do like the idea of using 4 figures early war and 3 later war.

With 6 and 10 mm figures, it is not the number of figures per base that is so important. I worried about a strip of three Irregular Miniature figures per base when first starting out. The goal was to get as many stands on table. To my surprise, it was the number of stands that had the most visual impact.

You definitely want to avoid any impression of Napoleonic lines. Many still think that assaults were fashioned this way in 1914 but this was not so. Four figures per base will be fine though – the equivalent of 1 per platoon.

I did 4 infantry to a base.

See my failed 10mm World War I Project maybe of some use. hope it helps.

Take care
