Just before Christmas I played another run through of Krieg Ohne Hass. I am determined to master the game. We played around with the shape of battlegroups and the effect of target priorities on those battlegroups.
Hope you find it interesting

Are the rules tactically challenging with sufficient tactical options and dilemmas for the players throughout the game?

I think you could play these very simply, and they wouldn't do that so much.
Having invested time in them, and unwrapped the nuances I think they do repay with a game that gives tactical dilemmas, problems and a satisfying experience.

Looks as if you are getting the hang of the nuances already!
The whole game was actually designed for Western Desert battles as I found a poor choice of rules that would enable one player to control several Divisions in one evening (apologies to any rule sets that I had not found!).
Desert battles are quite different as they really emphasise the power of armoured units and the PBI are constantly struggling to find any sort of beneficial terrain. The seemingly very slight advantages that the Panzer Divs have need to be worked on to get the most out of the German forces.
The whole ethos behind the rules is a grand tactical one. Despite the lack of record keeping and apparent freedom with tactical stances/orders you should have a workable plan and you need to get the best from your troops by putting them in situations where they can succeed. Of course if all else fails grit your teeth and get stuck in – is that trusted Brigadier in the right place?
I do have a random terrain generation system that handles encounter battles for the period too, feel free to contact me if you are interested.
No problem with house rules at all, I have been wargaming long enough to know why…….
Cheers, Lance.
