Saw this on a chess thread, tried to post it yesterday but seems not to have taken. Think its not real but should be. link |

I'm sure that's a lovely decoration, but I've never liked translating fancy chess pieces to their Staunton equivalents in my mind. |

Chess thread blogger thought same thing, I could get use to it but depending on what they were made of they might be delicate or very sharp. But I why not usually searching in the fantasy figures bet one could make up a set with figures not specifically made as chess pieces. I have a American Revolutionary War set. |

I bought my chess set in England when I was stationed there 36 years ago so have not a clue. |

Joe: Have you looked on eBay? Heck of a lot there. If you have looked, is it prices, quality, or…? As far as this set goes, if not standard pieces, I prefer a difference between the two sides. For AWI, for instance, while I can deal with having George Washington as a king, I'd prefer him not being BOTH kings. For a LotR set, Gandalf or Elrond as one, Sauron as the other. Doug |

Great looking sculptures, but I would have the "death dealer" figure as the bishop as he looks taller, the figure on the sleigh as the knight, or maybe the girl with the tiger as the knight. Either way, the knight piece should always be someone riding some type of animal. |

For LOTR,Elrond. Gandalf better as a bishop, which would,I suppose, leave Radagast as the other (not the movie version!). Saruman, obviously, for dark side; have to think about the other. Queens,Galadriel and Shelob. The problem with this sort of thing has always been that in chess, you have to deal with the fact that the power of the king and queen are the reverse of the traditional roles: that shrinking maiden will be moving all over the board, knocking off the big bruisers, while "Conan" just stands there. Of course, you could treat them as if they were the other piece, but "Queen Conan" seems kind of odd. Maybe a Xena set would work. |

On this chess thread I got this from it has delved into some of the beginnings of chess, the queen taking the combined rolls of the bishop and rook is a fairly new (but hundreds of years ago still) version. |

"A bit pricey"? I change my nomination for understatement of the year! |

True enough, Hafen, about Gandalf NOT a king, but everybody seems to place him there. ;->= As for 'power', I always got the impression Galadriel would fit fine, not so much Shelob. Main point, whomever, if characters, should be in contention. I suppose it shows I've never had a 'friendly game of chess…' Doug |

Doug--yeah. I see the Frazetta set has two "Conans", which seems odd. Galadriel/Shelob may also seem odd, but there are parallels, beyond Shelob being the only "female" character on the evil side: both remain in their "lairs", and influence events through "pawns"(ahem!). Both are immensely old. There are others you can think of. Tolkien made the connection: "Few escape her nets, they say". That was said of Galadriel, not Shelob. Of course,in story terms,Shelob is the traditional wicked witch/stepmother character, the False Mother that devours,as Sauron is the False Father that seeks the destruction of the savior child,Aragorn, and then Frodo. Tolkien really took her into mythic nihilism: "All living things were her food, and her vomit darkness". Weakened a little by Tolkien's sense of decorum,as we don't think of vomit being the last product of metabolism, but the imagery is still terrifying. The True Mother figure is Galadriel, certainly for Aragorn at least,as Elrond is his True Father. And Arwen is of course the Solveig character for whom the quest is undertaken. For the hobbits, both of these female roles are taken by Bag End. Hmm,I seem to have "undertaken" a bit of a tangent. . . So. . .orcs are obvious pawns; what about the Good side? |

14 Bore: understood. The Beast: I've been a rated club player for years. I've been looking for an AWI Set for awhile now. It's hard to determine quality, etc., on the 'net.

Rook seems to be girl and (1) sabertooth from the Ace Books Savage Pellucidar cover:
If they really make this set out of "pure silver",you probably won't see many down at the chess club. |

Made by Heads or Tales Coins: link Supports the Frazetta Museum,so a worthy cause. Out of my league,though--the Conan is $329.00 USD. Silver Warrior (guy on the sled-bishop,should be knight): $429. USD Atlantis (pawns) are a "mere" $249 USD each. I MIGHT be able to afford a plastic one. . . |
