Looking for a simple set of rules. I have DBA and C&C Ancients. What else is out there that is simple and fun preferably with a bit of flavor. Thanks, Al |

You could try Neil Thomas' Ancient and Medieval wargames. They have period specific rules and army lists for each. Availible cheap if you have a kindle or the free kindle app. link |

Depends on your definition of simple, but To the Strongest! is a good set, and no more difficult than C&CA. Uses squares for movement, you activate by command and pull cards to activate individual units within that command (usually need a 2 or better to activate; more if you try to activate a unit a second or third time in a turn or are trying a tricky move). Same deal with combat: pull a card to hit (usually a 6 or 8 needed) and opponent pulls to save hits (usually somewhere between 6&8). You have leaders, various troop types, and additional rules for extra interest if you want to add them (stratagems, etc). The hardest thing to get your head around (for this numbskull, anyway!) was the victory rules. But once you have them, you have them. Free army lists too, and great support from Simon the author (to be clear, I helped with checking over the drafts, so I do have a slight bias towards them, but no financial stake!). Cheers, Aaron |

..or rather than cards, we use 10 sided dice for To The Strongest, and track with little chits we purchased from Simon. Dave |

Throw me a '6' probably fits the bill. PDF link Ancient and Medieval Wargaming from Neil Thomas is another. Available on the Kindle these days. Check amazon. To the Strongest would be another excellent choice. |

Another.vote for To the Strongest. Also no financial stake, but I enjoyed the rules so much I am helping Simon Miller to expand them to the ECW. They brought fun back into my gaming, and I cannot say better than that! Mollinary |

We always assume "Ancients and Medieval rules" means Line-of-Battle rules. There are also a number of Big Skirmish rules out there which are usually scenario based. Lion Rampant Saga Dux Britanniarum Then you have rules you can use for both battle levels like Basic Impetus V1 or V2 Pat |

I use Captains and Kings by Two Hour Wargames. The scale is warband. There is a campaign system that includes rules for different types of sieging. They are also designed for solo play. |

Basic Impetus 2 has been released. I bought a digital copy a few days ago. It's an excellent system that not only lets you play ancients and medieval but is very flexible. Movement uses base width instead of inches, so as long as both armies have the same basing, it will work. I admit to being quite biased towards Basic Impetus(as well as regular Impetus) but I would encourage you to purchase the digital (.pdf) copy from Wargame Vault and give it a try. |

Guess you won't get much simpler than Neil Thomas' "Ancient and Medieval wargames". His "One Hour Wargames Rules" are even more basic, but loose… something… through simplification. They still have "a bit of flavor", but rather by focussing on special "periods" (normally that would be considered an advantage – not so sure about OHW though). You might find home brew modifications on the net (excellent blog darkages40and25.blogspot.de). One (small and final step) towards simplification: Junior General link I consider DBA and C&C Ancients two of the very best rule sets out there, trying to find "better" (and rather more basic) alternatives will be… trying ;-) Basic Impetus or Throw me a '6' would be my alternatives. |

I'll second TKindred on Basic Impetus 2. Easy and very fun to play and all 300+ army lists are included in the book. Christopher |

Ancient and Medieval Warfare as the core, modified with some of the turn sequence ideas from Throw Me a 6, using the army lists from Might of Arms, and the command points and strategy options from Dux Bellorum. Or, least that's the brew for this Christmas. ;) |
