What is the equivalent of this in British English, as I don't believe that we have such a product name on this side of The Pond? Thanks. |

Wicks sell it as do most builders merchants usually just called caulk or sealant It is not always clear on the various brands as to whether the are silicone or latex based so if it has to be latex you'll need to read the label carefully, x42 |

It has to be paintable, so I don't think ordinary silicone sealer would do. I would have thought it too sticky to start spreading out for flat roads and rivers. From the various tutorials on TMP, I believe it has to be latex and ideally clear. |

Just ask for paintable tub or window caulking, either one will do. Silicone or latex doesn't matter too much as long as it is paintable. As to color, choose depending on your project. For roads for example I use a color labeled "almond" or "tan" depending on the manufacturer. |

Silicone isn't paintable, anything latex is, in the US painters caulk is about as cheep as you can get that is acceptable. |

I use acrylic sealant. Usually brown frame sealant. I've picked it up in Poundland or failing that screwfix usually have some of their own brand stuff quite cheap. The acrylic stuff is paintable. |

I don't believe that we have such a product name on this side of The Pond Why would you think that? There are only a couple manufacturers of this type of product, and they supply most of the world. The brand I use (DAP Alex Plus) and have been using for 15 years is available on Amazon.co.uk, so clearly it's available on your side of The Pond. A couple things to remember: - Silicone caulk is not paintable (in spite of some manufacturer's claims), but latex with silicone (sometimes called "latex plus silicone" or "siliconized latex") definitely is. - Acrylic caulk is paintable, but less flexible than latex. If you're using it on rigid terrain, either will work just fine, but if you're making a flexible mat you're better off with latex. - Clear caulk will require heavier coverage of paint than an opaque colored caulk. Again, if you're using it on something rigid this won't matter much, but if it's going over something flexible it may cause a problem since the paint will be less flexible than the caulk, and it will crack or separate. - Choose your caulk base color wisely, taking into account what colors you are going to be putting over it. This will save time and materials. I use a variety of mid-browns – DAP "Cedar Tan" being my favorite because of its close resemblance to mud . . . an excellent starting point for any piece of terrain. |

You can colour acrylic sealant. I've used both ordinary household emulsion ( usually match pots ) and acrylic paint. It just needs to be water based. You need to be a bit careful as adding liquid to the caulk will make it more runny. It's better to start with one of the ( slightly ) more expensive brands rather than the pound shop variety. The cheap one are a bit more fluid, fine for direct use, but they get a bit sloppy if you add too much paint. Tool Station is a good place to get it from. I use their frame sealant ( link ) at £1.40GBP a tube. As it cures by evaporation you can empty the tubes into an airtight container, give it all a good mix, and keep any you don't use for later. I've kept it for over 6 months with out it deteriorating. |

I have been using siliconized latex caulk to base my figs and buildings for over 20 years. It is definitely paintable. When you push in your groundwork into the caulk and let it dry for a day; everything is paintable and dry brushable. |
