The NAVADMIN message cancels a late September decision in which service leadership announced it would no longer address sailors by their rating – a more than 200-year-old tradition in which enlisted were known by their job title – and instead refer to enlisted sailors with the generic titles of Seaman (E-1 to E-3) or Petty Officer (E-4 to E-6).

Well that will do wonders for morale, not to mention the amount of confusion it will induce.

Stupid call.

My guess is this caused an uproar in the enlisted ranks and that's why they Navy is switching back.

Yes, sanity seems to have returned.

I would expect that use of the rating would cause less confusion than use of generic titles. E.g., there may be 5 seamen on deck, but only one of them is the bo'sun.

Yeah, this was BuPers pulling their head out of their ass.

I was "YN2" for 3.5 years out of a 5.5 year career. I will still answer to that today, and I've been out of the Navy for nearly 11 years now.

Besides, yell "Petty Officer" on a sub and about 120 of 150 will answer you.

Win one, lose one.

Titles are a minor issue – physical qualifications are a major one.

Reportedly, the Marines are eliminating the pullup standards for women (how sexist), and having them do pushups instead.

Seems to me quite a few of us predicted that not too long ago.

Not sure which category men that identify as women (or vice versa) will fall under, in the USMC, but you know that's coming.

Women Marines have not had to do pullups for years, if ever. They do the flexed arm hang. HQ marine Corps is still doing studies.

Yeah. Because the ability to do ten gadzillion pull-ups is absolutely key for effectiveness on today's battlefield.
