Seeking opinions on best book from a gaming perspective, rather than socio-political.

Ideally, would need to have detailed battle maps and Orbats.

In one of my searches online, I recall a critical review of one book (the title escapes me, hence my posting) which was that it contained too much information on the battles!

Thanks,

Alan

"Empires Collide" from Osprey is a decent basic history, Uniforms and bits of orbats. Good for the price.

I agree, "Empires Collide". I have it and use it often.

Just got it for a tenner plus postage on an auction site.

I have just read the Journals of Robert Rogers of the Rangers. Got it on Kindle for a couple of bucks.

Not a lot of detail about specific actions, but certainly provides a lot of atmosphere.

Not a literary classic though.

Not best, but fun, useful, and targeted straight at wargamers: the old CWG game Habitants and Highlanders. The book (er, PDF now) contains scenarios with maps and OOBs and lots of background written just for us.

Many thanks for all the suggestions.

Andy, what rules are you using for your aet piece battles with 10mm figures?

Andy: thanks for posting that.

My copy of "Empires Collide" arrived this morning, wrapped in tissue paper, sealed in a bubblewrap bag and a sturdy box. It's the hard copy version and in very good condition, not bad for a tenner plus postage.

Looks like it will be a comprehensive read.

Envious: mine is still to arrive!

What scale and rules will you be using?

JimDuncanUK22 Dec 2016 2:44 p.m. PST

28mm and Sharp Practice.

Sharp Practice is excellent for the period.

+7 for Habitants and Highlanders. Playable rules, loads of scenarios – plus some flag and uniform information and a bit of background. Rules are for both battles and skirmishes but at different basing levels. HH and Bill Protz Drums Along the Mohawk (sadly, not so playable to me) were both instrumental in building my FIW collection – more than 1,000 figures painted so far. I use app. 40 figure companies which can also be used as battalions, 3 figures per base.
