Howdy folks,

I've wrote a brief article on the 10 colours I would recommend every painter needs, with my reasons why, and a couple of tips. The full article is on my blog here –

link

Obviously a lot depends on what period you are starting out in, but I dont think you could go far wrong with these 10 –

1 White
2 Black
3 Silver
4 Flesh
5 Brown
6 Green
7 Blue
8 Red
9 Yellow Brown
10 Leather

Thoughts?

I agree with every color except #3

Silver is often way too shiny, I would go more with gunmetal than a pure silver

Yes, Steel or gun metal is far more useful. Also, I'm not a big fan of pre-mixed flesh.

Here's my 10:

White
Black
Unbleached Titanium
Raw Umber
Burnt Sienna
Cadmium Yellow
Cobalt Blue
Red
Steel
Chromium Green

You can mix Black & Silver to get Gunmetal.

I use silver on smaller scale figs (6mm and below). Gunmetal is just too dark at those scales.

Agree on silver, you can always dull it down.

Personally I'd switch blue for a pale tan, but that only really applies for post 1900.

Add to all, a pot of Windsor and Newton peat Brown ink for washing.

My two bits is that a new painter should get a Reaper Learn to Paint Kit. Pretty safe to assume new painters don't know how to paint, and you can't just give a newbie a set of paints and expect him to learn how to paint.

Good choices. I'd include gold instead of leather, but I'm mainly into fantasy rpg, so I've used gold more than leather in my miniatures.

One of my friends used gunmetal to paint mail armor. I haven't used it myself.

Interesting choice of yellow-brown instead of pure yellow. It's probably better for painting blond hair.

Uh ced? That's what I did years back. I started, practiced, made mistakes and leant

A good color wheel is quite useful for both beginners and seasoned painters.

Rich Bliss, what brand of paints are those colours?

Martin? Does the W&N peat brown ink work the same way as a vallejo or GW wash?

Cheers.

not pure white – i'd go with valejo deck tan or off-white
