Yes, I'm marking my first full year here with yet another silly poll. What's your favorite? I'll nominate this groundbreaking one by the great Saul Bass, just oozing with early sixties cool:

Lots to choose from, though. If you can't think of any offhand, someone has posted a list of 102 of them on youtube!

Hi

My vote is for Pink Panther

If you mean the original Pink Panther, then absolutely yes.

Hafen von Schlockenberg17 Dec 2016 2:13 p.m. PST

Oh yeah, Fritz Freleng and Henry Mancini, what's not to like?

Spawned a series of "cool" cartoons,too--at least the ones made for theaters.

Monty Python and the Holy Grail, what can be better?

Hafen von Schlockenberg17 Dec 2016 3:47 p.m. PST

Ooh yes, Holy Grail titles--actually fairly low key,at least at first:

I wonder if that guy on the wheel in the opening shot was a nod to The Devils(1971)? Now that was one weird movie.

Flash Gordon; the 1980 movie

I'm with Winston on this one.

The Way of the Gun.

JSchutt17 Dec 2016 6:37 p.m. PST

If a TV show is permissible mine would be the opening to "Get Smart." Why I always expected a different ending I'm not sure.

rxpjks117 Dec 2016 6:46 p.m. PST

Western, the good the bad and the ugly.

The opening to "Gods and Generals" is heart-renderingly lovely (which made the mediocrity of the rest of the film all the more disappointing).

Barbarella (num nums)
Fahrenheit 451 (spoken credits -- get it?)
Zardoz (I'm serious -- Beethoven's Seventh)
The Green Slime (rockin')
The Blob (1958 -- Bacharach and that funky animation)

Dynaman878918 Dec 2016 6:31 a.m. PST

Green Slime! I may have to change my vote. Cheesy movie but a guilty pleasure!

Hafen von Schlockenberg18 Dec 2016 9:04 a.m. PST

I'd still like to hear your favorite, but multiples allowed, in order to at least partially offset Bill's "Where were you during the nominations" crack, should this by some fluke ever become a "real" poll.

Once Upon A Time In the West

…the Sergio Leonne western…

next to no dialogue, the only sounds are the wind pump, the wind….

..and it ends in a bloody shoot out….

Moonbeast18 Dec 2016 10:18 a.m. PST

The opening to Mystery Science Theater 3000.

Jack Elam: "Looks like we didn't bring enough horses"
Charles Bronson: "No, you brought two too many"
Classic!

Casablanca.

Road to Morocco is fun, too.

grtbrt18 Dec 2016 8:40 p.m. PST

The only good part of Passenger 57 – when the terrorists take over the plane and the leader asks the flight crew who is in charge – the captains says 'I am" and is promptly shot – Question asked again and co-pilot says "You are ".
Laugh ever time I see it -and even now smiling writing about it .

The opening to the original "Alien" was excellent. It really captured the foreboding sense of doom of the movie.

Hafen von Schlockenberg19 Dec 2016 1:23 p.m. PST

Yes,very true! Wonder if it would work with today's loudness-inured audiences?

Off topic, but still movie-related,that goes double,or triple, for trailers, which incidentally started changing around that time, apparently to be more attention-grabbing. I don't know about you,but after being bombarded with five or six of those hyper-cut things in a row, I can't remember anything about any of them--sensory overload obliterates all. Of course, modern trailers are mostly farmed out to a very few "trailer studios",so everything starts to look "samey" after a while.

I often wonder what the reaction would be if,in the middle of all the noise and flash, theater audiences were suddenly served up something like this one, from 1979:

youtu.be/3b726feAhdU

Seeing it again reminds me of mine: by the end of it, I was frozen solid, halfway out of my seat.

@Hafen: Yes! The Shining trailer was an example of "move trailer as art form". Not like today's trailers, where you don't have to go see the movie since the trailer has already shown you all the highlights!

Although, I did enjoy this version of The Shining: YouTube link

Conan the Barbarian

"Between the time when the oceans drank Atlantis and the rise of the sons of Aryas, there was an age undreamed of. And unto this, Conan, destined to wear the jeweled crown of Aquilonia upon a troubled brow. It is I, his chronicler, who alone can tell thee of his saga. Let me tell you of the days of high adventure!"

Followed by great music playing while Conan as a small boy watches his father forge a sword.

The original Conan is one of the best fantasy movies ever made! I have the soundtrack and we sometimes put it on when setting up a game.
