Bonjour Chaps,

Need some help with the colour of these please.

Sometimes they're shown as black but other times white.

My internet searches have been fruitless so I hope someone can come with an answer as to whether is was year-specific or campaign versus dress uniform.

Cheers,

Paul

I know less than nothing about this……

But I do get the impression that the chaps in green (The Jagers) wore black gloves and gauntlets and the chaps in dark blue (Chevaulegers) used white….which would fit in with the custom and practice for most countries…….OK, I guess not for French Chasseurs a Cheval or for…oh forget it.

There will be far more expert responses I will guarantee.

Hi Deadhead,

You've hit the nail on the head with the complexity when you say:

"But I do get the impression that the chaps in green (The Jagers) wore black gloves and gauntlets and the chaps in dark blue (Chevaulegers) used white….which would fit in with the custom and practice for most countries…….OK, I guess not for French Chasseurs a Cheval or for…oh forget it."

I reckon that this is Doctorate level question!

Cheers,

Paul

According to "The Army of Wurttemberg 1806-14" by W J Rawkins:

Chevauleger regiments nos. 1 & 2 wore white leather gauntlets.

Jager zu Pferd regiments nos. 3 & 4 wore black leather gauntlets.

Dragoon regiment no. 5 wore white leather gauntlets.

The four squadrons of the Leibgarde zu Pferd wore white leather gauntlets. However, officers of the Leibjager squadron wore black gauntlets when on campaign.

I hope that is of some use to you AuvergneWargamer.

Cheers,

TW

Bonjour TW,

Spot on!

Very helpful indeed and I'll see if I can acquire a copy of "The Army of Wurttemberg".

Thanks,

Paul

For 3 pounds 99 pence, it's a bargain and you can download it!

Here is the URL where I have bought several from this gentleman. Excellent value at even a much higher price!
