"The whole question of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor has been mired for years in conspiracy theories. There are, naturally, huge problems with said conspiracy theories not least the motive of the American leadership in allowing the destruction of an important part of their Pacific Fleet; it is not as if Japan was being tricked into declaring war. However, one theory, perhaps because of my nationality, has always fascinated me: the idea that the British executive, possibly even the war cabinet, knew what was coming and chose not to inform ‘the cousins'. After all, Britain's paramount war aim (after the simple fact of survival) was bringing the US in: a huge amount of British ingenuity and energy and money was used to that end. If the British had picked up some notice of the coming day of fire, then, it might just have been in their interest to stay quiet about it, figuring that the loss of part of the US fleet was a price worth paying: though I confess I have problems with the logic here too…"

If the British knew what was coming, why were they so unprepared in SE Asia? Yet another stupid conspiracy theory.

Let's see … I'm a wartime British leader. My country faced off against the Germans and Italians alone for about a year, then the Germans were so kind as to bring the Russians into the war against them (along with bringing the Romanians, Hungarians and Fins into the war with them against the Russians).

So at this point I am at war with more than half of Europe, with only one ally who seems to be crumbling before the onslaught, and whom I would hardly trust if my life depended on it (which it does).

The yanks are stepping up to supply me and the Russians with all sorts of war kit, even at the expense of upgrading/building their own military. Some of it is quite good and useful. Some of it is not. But they seem to be taking my inputs and building lots of stuff I want and need. And they've even taken the extraordinary step of taking over the escort of many of the convoys bringing every kind of vital material to my shorts, even when it means engaging in combat with German raiders in a series of "incidents".

I can hardly think of a better plan then to get them into a war against someone OTHER than the Germans, and to do it in a way that virtually ensures they'll want to build all kinds of stuff that has NO VALUE to me in my war against the Germans, and also ensures they will take a goodly number of naval assets away from my side of the world.

Yep, that's a good plan. Think I'll go with that.

Silly English k-nig-hts.
