""This soldier, I realized, must have had friends at home and in his regiment; yet he lay there deserted by all except his dog. I looked on, unmoved, at battles which decided the future of nations. Tearless, I had given orders which brought death to thousands. Yet here I was stirred, profoundly stirred, stirred to tears. And by what? By the grief of one dog. Napoleon Bonaparte, on finding a dog beside the body of his dead master, licking his face and howling, on a moonlit field after a battle. Napoleon was haunted by this scene until his own death."… From here link Amicalement Armand |

But didn't Josephine's little dog bite him on their wedding night, or some similar occasion? Napoleon was notoriously afraid of cats. |

I thought it was rabbits that made him flee…….and I do mean without an "a" on the end, as carried by dogs…….…well documented. |

I take it 'rabbit' isn't a euphemism. |

July 1807, shortly after the treaty of Tilsit was signed, Napoleon was attacked by up to 3000 rabbits which climbed up his legs and coat and chased him to his coach where the assault continued. Chandler says "with a finer understanding of Napoleonic strategy than most of his generals, the rabbit horde divided into two wings and poured around the flanks of the party and headed for the imperial coach." I wonder if that was the inspiration for the Python Holy Grail sketch. |

Tyrants and Saints love dogs and or cats, its the ones who cannot love that I truly fear, for they can only love themselves and care for none but themselves. Who do you think were truly that terrible? |

Tango01 Good point. Unless it was actually Blucher in disguise. I mean. he was known to be barking mad at times, wasn't he? And I don't know about you, but if a dog barks at me, my first thought would not be to give it a biscuit. LOL |

I'm not convinced. We've just welcomed in a new Labrador to the family, but Napoleon didn't send a card or anything… |
