I'm attempting to paint some formations for a Blenheim refight but are stuck by these two Horse Regiments. Vennigen's Karabinere, George Friedrich von Vennigen (Palatine/UP auxiliary) (two squadrons, 300 men) Fugger's Cuirassier, Major General Graf von Fugger (Swabia) (three squadrons, 240 men)Fugger's regiment were NOT Cuirassier Both are described in Grants book as Cuirassier but not so in the OOB lifted off the internet. Any sage like insights from TMP welcome! |

The obvious answer would be when they are not wearing the cuirass. Perhaps some regiments retained the old name but were not equipped as such as in Grenadiers, Fusiliers, etc. |

Is the answer "when its a Gendarme " ? |

And, of course, some units described as "Horse" may actually have worn a cuirass under their waistcoat. To be honest, fighting Blenheim in any kind of meaningful way is not possible at the level of unit you seem to be thinking of, unless you have a massive space, are using 2 mm figures, can paint at a rapid pace and have loads of time. Try using "Twilight of the SunKing" brigade level rules, so fine differences in squadrons are not so important. Available from Pike and Shotte Society. We have done Blenheim a couple of times, Ramillies once and are looking at Oudenarde and Malplaquet in the near future. |

Blenheim 2004, in 28mm. There was a massive amount of space indeed. Every regiment was depicted I believe. link |

From Editions Brokaw. Venningen (Gendarmes until 1710 then Carabinier) Coat Light Grey with Dark Green Cuffs and Waistcoat. Trousers leather. Shabraque Gray with Dark Green border. Black breastplate worn over the coat. Trumpeter reverse colours. Officers no cuirass. Fuggers ( Swabian Kreisler Reiter Regt #1) Coat White Gray. Trousers Gray. Cuffs and Vest Red.Musicians reversed colours. Shabraque Red with White trim. No mention is made of a cuirass, but the 2nd Reiter Regt. had a back and breast of leather so it is probably that the same applied to Fuggers. Hope this helps. |

@Chad47. Thanks very much for your help! That sorts the mystery! @Steamingdave47. Good points Dave. I've undertaken to paint certain brigades and we'll see how the project unfolds. @Idontbelieveit. Very enjoyable report! I've saved it so I can go back again! |
