I was looking at Sharpie's oil based paint pens, specifically the fine and extra fine point ones. I was wondering if anyone had any experience with the white one, for painting straps.

Are they any good for straps? Do they provide good coverage?

Thanks!

I have the black ones and they work excellent for blacklining straps and such, when I did some 28mm and 15mm.

I did not see the white ones but I am now ordering. Thanks!

Yeah, I was thinking of getting every color for every occasion :) But the white I am concerned about for good coverage in one application.

I have had 2 white ones, both worked lousy leaked. I am not a fan.

When I tried them, the Sharpie-brand white paint pens clogged after first use. frown

These would be great for details on shabraques.

I have been using them for stripes on models with no issues so far.

To the gents with the ones that work well, are they Sharpie brand or another brand? If it's a case of some good, some bad, it might still be worth trying a couple.

Bashytubits13 Dec 2016 8:18 p.m. PST

Mine are Sharpie brand.

The ad doesn't tell you the size of the "extra fine" point. I use the excellent uni pin fine line make. Goes down to .005, so I can even do straps on 1/300. Find it best to store upright, point upwards. Sadly, uni pin has limited colour range. But they have lasted me for years.

I went to the link, and saw they also have water-based paint pens. I would think such would be better (easier to clean, same type of paint we all use) than oil based. Anyone try those?

You do not want water based. I tried that then later varnished and the ink spread everywhere. I could not even properly paint over as it spread onto that to

Like gbowen said you need to watch the water based ones. I found some that are permanent ink and have pretty good luck with them not running.

I used two different tips with the sharpie brand both leaked. I envy those who had no problem

Good advice.

If I decide to "take the plunge" as it were, what colors do you find you use the most of? Is it worth getting the Sharpie multi-pack or just getting a couple (white, black, etc)?

FWIW I've used Future to seal Sharpies (regular ones, not the oil-based paints) and then varnished. Seems to have worked so far on gashapons (vinyl plastic toys from Japan).

What stores carry these?
