I posted some pictures of a late Roman army I just finished along with some generic barbarian types:

Nice.

You write as if all barbarians looked alike, but, e.g., the Belgae could certainly tell the difference between the Aquitani and the Celtae. They all had styles of dress, banners, standards, etc.

I realize that in the real world there were enormous differences in appearance between tribal groups. I game a lot of different eras so trying to create individual armies for separate tribes could get very expensive. My regular gaming group is not exacting when it comes to figure details and so having a sort of generic early Dark Ages tribal force that is "close enough" is satisfactory for us. It's also useful since we do fantasy games as well.

Riders of Rohan come up well as Goths! Good looking armies – I have used the GB warriors as Dacians, they do the job and add variety.

@bogdanwaz: I was just messing with you. If I were setting up armies for that period, I would do the same for the barbarians, and wouldn't make too much work out of distinguishing Roman units, either.

Sorry, Glenn Goffin, didn't realize you were joking. I once ran a Roman Science Fiction game at a convention and was taken to task by an ancients player as if I had personally stabbed Julius Caesar.
