I want to start basing up my 1/1200 Civil War collection, and I think, instead of using sheet styrene (as I have done in the past) or MDF/plywood, I want to find some affordable clear bases to allow the gaming table surface to show through. Does anyone sell rectangular bases, and what sort of adhesive does one use? I am worried about using superglue as it might fog around the ship.

Thanks!

Litko will make them for you. They will drill a 3mm hole in the centre. You can mount a magnet in this hole and another can be fitted under your ship if you drill a hole.

Alternatively you if you a very careful you can use epoxy to stick them to the clear base. I'd go the magnet route myself.

Litko will usually make whatever you want.

I have used locktite gel crazy glue to affix hero clix figures to clear bases without fogging.

Superglue only fogs when there is no-where to vent the fumes. Work with good ventilation and use sparingly and there should be no problem.

The jewelry making section of a craft store has glue designed to dry clear and without altering other materials.
G-S Hypo Cement is one specific brand.

After mounting my ships on clear bases I added wakes using clear Acrylic paste with a bit of white paint to simulate whitecaps.

As all my ships were different in length and width I cut up plastic rectangles from an old plastic poster picture frame. It was thin enough to snap apart into rectangles after heavy scoring and worked out fine.

I would just use gue dots,ie clear blobs of clear sticky (for want of a better term) snot. The sort of stuff used to attach giveaways to magazine covers

I ordered a few clear bases from Litko a couple of months ago. I used them to rebase my Heroclix miniatures. I was very pleased with the results, and I ordered more.

Litko also sells Craftix glue. It's pretty strong, but it dries very quickly. It also tends to leave this wispy "string'" behind when you use it. That said, I've found it quite useful.
